FP Opus Rainout

Post by gregnga » Sun Dec 04, 2016 8:08 am

I have been using a Resmed Swift II for years and recently started using a Fisher Paykel Opus 360. I notice that I am having a problem with moisture collecting in the pillows of the Opus. I keep the room at 73 degrees when I am sleeping so I am surprised this would be a problem. I never had this issue with the Swift II.

Anybody else have this issue and a solution.

Check out the Padacheek barrel cozy.
http://www.padacheek.com/PACSwiftII_Barrel_cozy.html

It can happen with nasal pillows when the moisture in our own exhaled breaths condenses in the pillows because the room air temp cools the air to the point of release of the moisture.
Reducing the humidity incoming from the machine may or may not help.
Increasing the room air temp might help but if you don't like it warmer it might not be all that comfortable.
Using a hose cozy to help keep the air in the long hose might help too.

Are you using the humidifier shown in your profile?

Yes, I am using the humidifier in my profile. In referencing the link you posted, I am wondering if a fleece hose cover would work just well or better that the hose cozy

The hose cozy might be enough to keep the air warmer in the nasal pillows because it will lessen the cooling that happens along the long hose.

What you are experiencing in physics in action and what you have to do is figure out some way of keeping the air in the nasal pillows from cooling to the point of releasing the moisture.
There are several ways to get that air warmer and you just have to try to figure out what works best for you.
Heck, you may only need a degree or two warmer. We just never know exactly whether that point of cooling is.

So you have several options.
1...the barrel cozy for the pillows themselves
2...the hose cozy to help insulate the long hose and hopefully help deliver warmer air at the nasal pillow level.
3...that I didn't mention because I wasn't for sure if you were still using that older model humidifier...a stand alone heated hose.
Like this one https://www.cpap.com/productpage/hybern ... -hose.html

There are minor pros and cons to all the options. I have been in your shoes and used all of the above options at one time or another prior to getting a machine that offered an integrated heated hose.
If you want to give the hose cozy a trial run and have some old socks laying around...cut the toes out and make a little DIY hose cozy and secure with tape or bread ties. That was what I did first before buying a nice hose cozy from Padacheek.

That's exactly what I will do. I never had this problem with the Mirage Swift II but I noticed that plastic hose seems to thinner on the Opus. I also have a Swift FX that I have the same problem with.
