Any one else dealing with chronic sinusitis?

Post by gravyv » Sat Sep 24, 2016 12:46 am

I can't seem to cure my sinusitis. It keeps coming back and affects my ability to use my cpap. I've tried meds, nasal sprays/rinses, and even had a turbinate reduction surgery. None of them worked completely. The congestion keeps coming back intermittently. I guess the next step for me is to get allergy testing done but my doc said it can take up to a year to find out.

Have you played around with your humidity levels? Being in a similar situation to yours, I decided to try passover humidification after thinking that I needed at least a low amount of humidity. Hasn't been the total answer but there has definitely been improvement.

Many people have found using a full face mask helps sinus like conditions. It actually made mine worse but I thought I would throw that out there for your consideration.

Did you have surgery for a deviated septum because if you didn't perhaps that is a missing part of the puzzle?

Regarding allergy testing, did your doc mean that if you had allergy shots, it would take a year to know if the treatment worked?

Best of luck.

Higher humidity helped my sinusitis.

Couple of things:

Raise the humidity
Heated hose (love mine)
Ayr Saline Nasal Gel (No-Drip) Sinus Spray
Sleep with head at an angle

I have morning migraines because of nose. This is what I'm doing to reduce nasal issues for myself.

Reflux at night, which is related to sleep apnea, can also cause a chronic stuffed up nose. You could try not eating for 4 hours before going to bed.
I just had a 2 month bout with stuffy nose, probably a combination of seasonal allergies and reflux. I use Flonase and Singular to get rid if the problem - for now.

Reflux does NOT cause nasal congestion - better not to post at all unless you know what you're talking about.

The acid can cause inflammation in the nasal passages.

Well acid reflux is listed as a possible cause of sinus problems especially in cases that don't respond to conventional treatment.

And the connection between apnea, respiratory problems, and reflux gets even more interesting if you read Dr. Steven Park and others. It had previously been assumed that stomach contents, such acid and pepsin, rolled into the respiratory system while sleeping (which can happen). They now know that on occasion, an apnea "event" of the airway can trigger the brain to increase respiratory effort to the extent where pressure buildup in the chest actually suctions up stomach contents into the respiratory system. So this is evidence of discrete apnea events causing stomach contents to suddenly be present in the respiratory system, causing one to cough, choke or develop a stuffed up nose or sore throat. The symptoms one experiences, whether sore throat, asthma, stuffed nose, etc depends on where the acid droplets land. I have read that droplets landing on the adenoids can cause a horrible stuffed nose.

I find this all so interesting.

Yes, go get allergy testing to find out if you have allergic rhinitis. Otherwise, you could be one of those having VASOMOTOR RHINITIS caused by air flow from a CPAP.

Yes, I have had major issues that I finally just resolved. I have had some horrific colds over the past year and lost my sense of taste and smell for over a month. A month ago, I purchased a SoClean cpap and mask cleaning machine and it has done a phenomenal job.
