Dreamstation Backlight Settings?

Post by Hosemaster3000 » Tue Sep 20, 2016 7:08 am

So the only thing wrong with my Dreamstation after the first night is...THE BACKLIGHT. I don't want to get blasted with light at 3am when I get up to pee. MY EYES!

Can someone tell me where the "off" switch for it in the settings menu so it doesn't automatically light up and give me stats when I turn off the machine to get up? I can't find any mention of it in the manual

TIA.

the most common solution is a towel, or postit note.

or turn the machine around so it lights your way

The light goes off after a short while. Is it really that annoying for the short time it's on?

It can be for those with high sensitivity or a predisposition to migraines.
For example, bright lights and loud noises can be quite painful for those people.

I'd say "don't confuse DunderHead with facts" but it's clear that he lives in his own little world, and reality doesn't factor into it.

I like the light for going to the bathroom, it illuminates the way for me so I don't run into the four post bed or the the wall.

For me. its not just the light, my machine beeps loudly when it turns off. Its not exactly optimal for my hubby who is sound asleep when I get up to pee in the middle of the night. What the heck was the manufacturer thinking??

Another thing you can do is leave it running rather than powering it off during potty breaks. The light won't go on that way!

So...Your ideas are...post #1...Turn it off if it bothers you...OR...post #2...Leave it on. Why didn't anyone else think of that?

The DreamStation has an ambient light sensor on it to adjust the brightness of the display depending on room brightness. On my initial DreamStation this worked great and the display turned on but didn't light up the room when I got up in the night. It also made it easier on the eyes if for some reason I wanted to read the display.
The DreamStation started making a lot of noise so I returned it to the DME for repair or replacement. The dimming feature on the replacement didn't work so I returned it and got another one which also didn't dim as it should. The RT's at the DME didn't even know about the dimming feature. I called Philips and gave them the S/N of the replacement machine and all they could say is that the dimming feature should work. The S/N of the machine that worked was lower than the one that didn't so I wonder if it is a software issue.

Since this machine is advertised as having this dimming feature I think everyone who has a machine on which this doesn't work should pester your DME and Philips to resolve the problem.

I noticed that if you attach the hose and mask and start breathing (on a Dreamstation CPAP), the machine will go on without lighting up the panel. I have the auto on/off feature disabled, but apparently you can still turn in on that way.

Do you have a PR System One Series 60 or a Series 50 machine?

The Series 60's do have a clinical setting that allows you to turn the annoying beeping off. The Series 50's do not.

I wanted to followup on this post.
I recently purchased a new Dreamstation. The LCD screen backlight was BRIGHT!!! Whenever you interact with any buttons, the screen came on at full brightness for approximately 60 seconds. So if you push the power button to turn it on / off, the screen came on. You could do shadow puppets on the far wall in my bedroom.

With a bit of research, I found that others had this issue and another board mentioned a firmware update fixes it.
I can confirm!

To see what firmware you are running, from the main screen, view My Provider. The first screen "Device" shows the Software version.
Prior to the update I was running 1.0.6.
I just updated the machine to 1.1.1.

I haven't tested it overnight yet, but now if you block the ambient light sensor (small hole behind power button), when the LCD comes on, it is SIGNIFICANTLY dimmer. Also, it seems that now when you simply turn off the machine, the LCD timeout is only about 35 seconds rather than 60. I believe the timeout is longer when using controls, but not certain.

Anyway, if the LCD brightness is an issue with your machine, ask your DME provider to upgrade the firmware. The issue has been fixed.

Hey Craig - thanks for that helpful bit of info. I suspected that was the case.
I have V1.0.6 - but don't have a DME, so will need to try and work out how to upgrade it myself!
The trial machine I had from Philips was perfect - but the one I subsequently bought (privately) isn't - I'm wondering if I buy the Philips modem thing if it would update.
I'll need to play about when I have time - in the meantime, it acts as a rest for my iPhone, which blocks out most of the light!!
Cheers - and thanks again!
