Now we see the possibility of developing therapies that, by narrowly targeting this newly identified circuit, could induce much higher-quality sleep.

Perhaps they need to study people who have absolutely no trouble sleeping;
and try to duplicate whatever is different from the sleepless.

This sounds similar (but different) to the idea behind Belsomra. From the lack of positive reviews, it doesn't seem Belsomra has worked out too well. Though I understand the FDA made them cut the dosage back to sub optimal.palerider wrote:http://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2 ... tates.htmlThis has potential huge clinical relevance,” de Lecea said. “Insomnia, a multibillion-dollar market for pharmaceutical companies, has traditionally been treated with drugs such as benzodiazepines that nonspecifically shut down the entire brain. Who said that, "similar but different," all the time, Maxwell Smart?

For Belsomra, they studied people who have narcolepsy.This sounds similar (but different) to the idea behind Belsomra. From the lack of positive reviews, it doesn't seem Belsomra has worked out too well. Though I understand the FDA made them cut the dosage back to sub optimal.

I've also read that Belsomra works best for people who haven't been taking any other sleeping pills.
Belsomra gives some people nightmares.

Where is the cheapest place to buy Belsomra? I'm looking for some help in falling asleep. Trazodone doesn't seem to work for me anymore

Check the manufacturer for possible discounts.
They sometimes do this for a limited time in hopes you will get "hooked".

Re: hope for insomniacs in the future?
Interesting read that seems to be focused on the pharmaceutical side of treatment. Thanks for posting that.
On a side note and speaking of drug treatment. I've been through the insomnia and fibromyalgia(pain management) programs at Mayo Clinic. The main focus in their teachings were to have people use lifestyle changes as their main treatment. They stressed that using pharmaceuticals was a last resort. They cited many examples where they helped people improve their quality of life through lifestyle changes and weaning them off as many drugs as possible. They definitely wanted people off the benzo's.
I can't tell you how many times I've spent maybe 15 minutes with a doc and right away they want to give you a prescription for something. Obviously the pharmaceutical industry is very influential in the U.S. Plus we like the quick fix here. Things cost a ton, so in and out as quick as possible has been the norm.
I asked one of the teachers at Mayo why they were promoting lifestyle changes when a large portion of the medical field seems to be promoting the drug trade. They said that drugs were relied on far to much and that they often were causing much of the problems that people were having. They said that much of the medical field has not yet adopted this way of thinking. Also that more and more providers were moving away from promoting the heavy use of drugs, but things happen slowly, often taking decades for the bigger picture to change. So Mayo had me take classes instead of immediately sending me out the door with a prescription. I got a lot more out of their "hands on"(more involved) approach to treatment and I'm very thankful for it. Of course they also make more money this way instead of having it go to the pharmaceutical industry.
Back to the article, it will be interesting to see what comes of this research and what it can do for people. Sounds like just getting off the computer before bed will help a ton of people.
