new mask/air in stomach

Post by jamie j » Sat Feb 13, 2016 9:17 am

I recently changed masks from an F&P Eson to a philips easylife. I haven't been sleeping as well and have clearly been having air going to my stomach which didn't seem to be a problem before. The air venting out through the exit port is clearly different between the two masks as the easylife seems to vent a strong high pressure stream whereas the Eson has the filter which reduces air loss. I'm wondering if this affects the pressure I receive and whether with the easylife the pressure is too low now to open my airway (thus pushing air into my stomach). Any thoughts?

The internal pressure, can not be different between the two masks. The total flow can be different but not the pressure. Each mask has an air exhaust system which depends on the design choices. At the same pressure, it can change the quantity liters of air per minute passed in the mask.

Thanks for your response -

So, if I understand correctly, the different masks should have no influence on whether my airway opens/stays closed because the pressure is the same, however, they may affect differently the amount of air going into the stomach?

Thanks

Not exactly!
The air that enters your stomach depends on the internal pressure of the mask therefore, should be no difference between both masks. What changes is the amount of air coming out of the vent holes, and depends on the architecture of the two masks.
Thought unique to the air in your stomach may depend on the different way of air circulation, Maybe Philips is more directed toward your nostrils?
Now it would take an expert! Pugsy?

The only way I can see the mask as a factor, since they are both nasal masks, is if the mask is not fitting well and you are having leaks or mouth breathing causing you to gulp air. If you are not monitoring your therapy, you need to get Sleepyhead if your machine is full data capable. Start by registering and adding your equipment. You can get Sleepyhead here. https://sleep.tnet.com/resources/sleepyhead

There are other factors more likely.
Look for other recent changes, like sleeping position.

Thanks all -

I actually think the new mask fits better, so I don't think it is leaking air any more than the other...maybe I'm doing more mouth breathing than before.

Thanks and I will look into sleepyhead

no, the filter *diffuses* the air that is vented so that it's not a hard jet of air, but it does not reduce the amount of air vented in any significant amount.

check the intentional vent rate table that's in the back of the manual.

regardless, that does NOT affect the pressure received in any way at all, because the machines automatically adjust flow rate to compensate for varying amounts of leak/vent.
