New Airsense 10 CPAP

Post by K5MOW » Wed Feb 10, 2016 4:49 pm

Good evening all

My insurance company approved for me getting a new CPAP. The machine I will be receiving is a Airsense 10 elet CPAP Machine with humidifier.
What do you all think of this machine. One concern I had was auto ramp feature. I absolutely hate the ramp feature in any CPAP. From what I understand the ramp feature has to be shut off by The company who programs it. I put in a call and sent a message to make sure this feature is turned off. It seems extremely odd to me that the company would make this feature so the patient couldn't turn it off and on.

Also does anyone know how I can look at my sleep data. Do I need software to look at it.

Anyway let me know what you all think this machine.

If you have not yet received the machine see if you can't get the doctor or DME to change it to the Airsense Autoset 10 an APAP machine so that you can use a range of pressures if you want to instead of one set pressure which is all you can use with straight CPAP. Most people like their Resmed Airsense Autosets.
Also you can monitor your data using Sleepyhead which is free to download and if you look at the top of the page under announcements it will show you how to download it for free.
The Airsense does come with something called MyAir that you register with them for but it does not provide a lot of information.

You definitely can change the settings on the ramp or turn it off. You just need the Clinical manual.

the Elite is acceptable, the autoset is better.

ramp adjustments are a non-issue.

Very happy with mine, except, the water tank seems to be too small for me. All adjustments are available, "Clinical Manual".

Love your cigar in the picture..... I am an aficionado as well
Beside I have been using an Airsense Autoset since last year feb and I love it. Thru the clinical menu I have also switched off the ramp and I use the machine most of the time without the humidifier unless I go to extremely dry places where the air humidity at night drop below 50%.
Enjoy the new machine..... for me is one of the best around.

You gotta have a clinical manual to turn the ramp on/off? What gives?

Yes I have already looked up how to get into the critical manual. I am looking forward to the machine arriving. I am still going to use the BiPAP machine you all help me program for back up. I wasn't sure if the insurance company and my deductibles we're going to be too high for me to get this new machine. This is the reason I needed that BiPAP machine program just in case I did not get my new machine. Now I will have a backup machine when needed.

Ramp time (including setting to auto), and EPR on/off are all in the patient menu. Ramp pressure, and EPR level (including if it can be enabled or not) are in the clinical menu. The autoramp is actually an awesome feature as it lets you set one pressure for when you get into bed, and one for when you fall asleep. My pressure is straight 9 with no EPR, but my autoramp is 8 with 3 EPR allowing me to breath naturally when I first put on the mask. Note that I did have to use the clinical menu to tweak the ramp settings for what I like. Unlike with a conventional ramp, the autoramp doesn't ramp up until it detects sleep onset (or 30 minutes have passed), and the ramp is over a few minutes instead of gradually over a fixed period. However, if you are not using a ramp now, you may not have much use for it, and simply turning it off does not require the clinical menu.

Also, the clinical menu is fairly intuitive so you can do this even without the manual. Just push the home button and the button on the knob simultaneously for 5 seconds.

One thing that really annoyed me before about the Airsense 10 was the cooldown cycle. I found the air to be too cold after coming back from the bathroom unless I went through the menu to turn the warmup on first. I found out that you can stop the cooldown by putting the cpap in powersave mode. Just hold the on/off button for 3-5 seconds. Then push it again to turn the machine pack on. The cooldown cycle is halted.

If I may ask, what exactly is "clinical menu"? Is it a specific area you access in the cpap machine, or is it a manual? If it's a specific area, are we as the end user able to access this section of the machine.

I ask as I'm thinking of purchasing this machine.

The clinical menu is where the DME sets your pressure and other settings. Usually they will pull out the Clinical Manual from your machine before they give it to you. It's not difficult to access that area and to get a copy of the Clinical Manual. Even if you never feel the need to change your settings the Clinical manual is important to learn and understand your machine. Many times the settings do need to be changed a bit to get the results you need so it is best to understand the process before changing.
When you get your machine let us know and we will point you to the necessary information you need to have good therapy.

Thanks for the reply, when you say the DME "will pull out the Clinical Manual from your machine", I'll assume it's software, not hardware? I'll also assume, they don't physically pull it, they just obtain the information which is what I'm able to do with my ResMed S8 Elite. With the help of this forum I was able to set my own settings on my existing machine. The DME would have done it for me, but it saved a trip if I could have done it myself.

If I can gain acesss to data and change my own settings, that would be a bonus.

The Clinical Manual is a paper booklet. They give you a User's Manual but we are not supposed to know the secret info in the Clinical manual so they take it out of your packet.
