Searching for a new CPAP Machine.
Searching for a new CPAP Machine.
I'm thinking of using my present 8-9 year old ResMed, S8 Elite 11 as a back up and purchasing a new machine but am a bit confused on what's on the market today. My present setting is 14.0 and have read on this forum that the ResMed S9 is a good machine.
In doing a search I've come across the following S9's, little did I know there were so many in the S9.
S9 VPAP Auto Bilevel w/H5i Humidifier
S9 AutoSet™ Auto CPAP Machine w/H5i Humidifier
S9 Elite™ CPAP System
S9 Escape™ with H5i
Then in the end I came across the one below.
AirSense™ 10 Elite CPAP System
I live in Ontario, Canada and I believe our plan covers about $1500.00 for the machine. I will know for sure once I get my email reply back from Sunlife Insurance.
Questions:
I was able to figure out how to change my setting on the S8 Elite 11, would I still be able to do so on the S9's?
I'm also thinking of replacing my Swift FX (2 years old, pillows 3 months old) and it seems the closest replacement would be the Air Fit P10, although some still prefer the Swift FX. If the P10 the next best to the FX?

What I found with the FX was where the hose attached directly to the pillow it would move the pillow when I moved in bed. The P10 hose is attached to a frame so is more stable to me. The trick with the P10 is if the headgear fits you because there is very little adjustment.

The S9 series is being replaced by the newer models of Airsense 10 machines. (if you are wanting to update to the newest Resmed model it will be the Airsense 10 line of products)

Thanks so much for the detailed reply, it makes it much easier to compare. I'm going to put a local price (including tax) to the previous selection so it will aid in my decision once I find out the exact insurance allowance.
S9 VPAP Auto Bilevel w/H5i Humidifier $2175.
S9 AutoSet™ Auto CPAP Machine w/H5i Humidifier $1125.
S9 Elite™ CPAP System W/Humidifier $1050.
S9 Escape™ with H5i $950.
Then in the end I came across the one below.
AirSense™ 10 Elite CPAP System w humidifier $1150.00
It would appear that the S9 AutoSet™ Auto CPAP Machine w/H5i Humidifier $1125. seems to be the best deal. As for the P10, I should check it out in person.
This Is a new one that I can across, but it seems to be an upgraded verson of the S9 autoset?
ResMed AirSense™ 10 AutoSet CPAP w/ HumidAir™ Humidifier $1225.

Here is a site where you can check out the machines. Those with a red NO are not data capable and should be avoided. https://sleep.tnet.com/cmd

You can get the S9Autoset cpap for her version for $499 from our host https://www.cpap.com It is pink is the only difference between the "for her" version and the regular S9 Autoset cpap.

Re: Searching for a new CPAP Machine.
It is unlikely that your insurance company with pay for a machine that was non partially paid for by the ADP, but check anyway.

The Swift FX was the first mask I tried and I just found it too claustrophobic, I much prefer my P10. It's so quiet too.

Are you planning to buy this machine out of pocket with a hope that your Sunlife Insurance policy will pick up the tab?My_Dream wrote:

I suggest you check with your sleep doctor. OHIP's Assistive Devices Program likely will subsidize your xpap purchase by paying 75%. Your Sunlife Insurance likely would cover the other 25%. If the Sunlife policy is like others, they won't pay anything until you've first purchased under the OHIP - ADP program.
As for which xpap to buy, you might not have a choice. Any S9's available at this point in time are "old stock". I suggest you get the latest version of xpap that is available - that means the Autosense 10 if you are planning to buy a Resmed machine.
Which version of xpap will depend on your prescription with the exception that you may be able to find a DME that will provide an Elite version instead of the basic Escape, or whatever that might be called these days.
I'm workin' on it.

I'll have to check with the insurance as to any restrictions on where it can be purchased since I'm located in Canada. Wow, 14different models, I think I've narrowed it down to 1. I'll assume the Airsense 10 autoset for her difference is the color?
WindCpap
I'll have to check the meaning of ADP as you make a good point. Assistive Devices Program........ok, I'm not aware of this.
Michelle-OH
I've been using the FX for a while now and it's on it's last legs so I won't be able to use it as a back up. I'm still undecided between the FX and P10.
Hose_Head
Yes, the last machine (ResMed S8 Elite 11) I paid out of pocket about 7 years ago and Sunlife Insurance reimbursed me 100%. To make a long story short my sleep doctor gave me a new prescription for a cpap machine just before he retired 1.5 years ago, but I'll assume it expired so I asked my family doctor to give me a new one. I'll assume the insurance will expect that.
This is the email reply I got from Sunlife.

Thank you for contacting Sun Life Financial. I welcome this opportunity to assist you.
Under your plan, a CPAP machine (Constant Positive Airway Pressure) is covered at 100 percent to the reasonable and customary amount of $2,000.00 every 3 benefit years.
If CPAP is approved by a provincial plan, we will consider the remaining amounts not reimbursed by the province and it will be deducted from the $2,000 R&C amount. Repairs are not subject to the $2,000.00 for the initial purchase
If CPAP is approved by a provincial plan such as ADP, we will consider the balance and above information will NOT be requested (provincial plans' requirements are similar to Sun Life Financials).
The following CPAP system funded by ADP includes: CPAP machine, Mask and Headgear, Heated Humidifier, Carrying Case, 6 FT Tubing, Power Cord, All necessary Filters and Caps and Client Instruction Manual.
Funding may be provided as a whole "system" or only for those items that need replacement after the initial purchase every 5 years. The prescription from the family doctor only states a Cpap machine replacement.

Re: Searching for a new CPAP Machine.
According to resmed, it has an additional algorithm that is slightly different meant specifically for the female physiological differences in sleep apnea. The comparison chart seems to suggest it includes both "autoset" and "autoset for her" so I suppose you could switch to the non gender specific autoset firmware if you have a "for her" machine.I'll assume the Airsense 10 autoset for her difference is the color?
http://www.resmed.com/us/en/consumer/pr ... r-her.html
For the S9 the only difference is color, but the S10 has different firmware.

Re: Searching for a new CPAP Machine.
This is how the third algorithm in the Airsense 10 Autoset For Her model differs. Which by the way might be handy for some men also to have.
1. Reduced rate of pressure increments designed to help prevent arousals.
2. Slower pressure decays.
3. Treats apneas up to 12 cm H2O and continues to respond to flow limitation and snore up to
20 cm H2O.
4. Minimum pressure (Min. Pressure) that adjusts according to the frequency of apneas:
If two apneas occur within a minute, the pressure reached in response to the second apnea will
become the new minimum treatment pressure until the next treatment session
