New CPAP user struggling with mask

Post by Sleepyjo » Sun Feb 07, 2016 3:18 pm

Hello,

Really hoping someone can help.

I'm a new user to CPAP. I've got a nose and mouth mask. I think I've prob had OSA for years and years but never realised.

I'm really struggling to get used to wearing it. I've only used it 3 times and the best I've done is had it on for about 3 hours and woken up several times during that period.

I'm at my wits end today because I'm so so exhausted. It feels like I was less tired before I used it.

Is it normal to take a while to get used to?
Should I just sleep through with it?
I'm quiet a heavy women and so was thinking of maybe turning the air pressure up a touch as its on 4.5 at the min.

Any help, advice or guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Jo

Hi Jo... yes, turn your pressure up to at least six and see how it goes. 4.5 is very low for most people. Keep it there for a week or so before you raise it further.

Heck yes, getting used to the mask is the most difficult part. So many threads here on that very subject. You aren't alone. If the mask seems to be comfortable, keep at it. Don't be concerned about taking it off. Simply put it back on. Hopefully, you'll sleep for longer periods each night.

Hi Sleepyjo, glad you found us. We need to know some more information. Please register your equipment. This link might help. wiki/index.php/Registering_Equipment_in_User_Profile
Once we know your mask, users of that mask might have more specific information. An adjustment period is normal. Sometimes if you use the mask while relaxing and watching TV or reading it helps your brain get used to it. Are you having leaks and that is what is waking you? Do you know what your machine settings are? Once we have more on your machine we can give you further help.

It is so common to have problems like yours, it would almost be easier to list the folks who don't have any problems getting started.

In order to help you we will need to know exactly which machine and mask you have and all the settings.

Unfortunately your post is like calling a mechanic and saying my car isn't working for me. What should I do.
He would want to know what car you have and what the symptoms are.

I'm on ASV machine 6 months and now trying out my 5th mask. It can be very difficult getting used to the mask. Just hang in there and keep trying - the solution will come. Good Luck!!
