Doctors appointment, should I be anxious

Post by EllaCatherine » Fri Feb 05, 2016 4:44 am

Hi All,
I was born with a bilateral cleft palate and was diagnosed with sleep apnea when I was 7, at that time it was mild-moderate, I was not recommend a CPAP at that time. Fast forward 10 years and with all the telltale signs of sleep apneaI I headed off to a paediatric sleep specialist (I am 17), after chatting for a while she recommended I undertook another sleep study, she also mentioned that after reading the report of my previous sleep study (that I had done at 7) that she would have had recommended CPAP treatment. So I had my sleep study one week ago (on the 29th of January) and was very happy that I slept enough for good data. Anyway prior to the study she said when I got the results would depend on severity and how many cases she had (she commented that she would have a lot of cases as the sleep clinic would have just reopened). My mother called the clinic and they put the sleep specialised on the phone to talk to my mother, now this lady only works a few days a weeks in sleep clinics and she wanted to see me asap and put my appointment in the next available slot which is the 17th of February. Now I'm beginning to feel very anxious, I've just started my last year of school (VCE yr 12) and already have a lot on my plate, so my question is should I be worried at all, or has this happened to any of you guys? Or any advice in general.

Thank you so much for reading this .

Hi. I didn't see any mention of what your diagnosis was.....whether mild, moderate, or severe. The good news is you got prioritized to see the specialist, so your treatment will begin sooner rather than later. Sounds like you have a lot on your plate. So the sooner your treatment begins, the better. Especially if you are experiencing fatigue. Worrying about things doesn't change anything. It just saps your energy from things that do matter and need your attention and energy. So, welcome to the club and please check back here if you have any questions.

Ella. As previously stated, you did not mention that you were feeling bad or not. Tired (during the day), cranky, falling asleep at the drop of a hat, etc... Go to your sleep doctor. If he recommends cpap treatment, the first thing you need to know is that they sometimes try to give you a cheap machine. Make sure it is a data-capable machine. That way you can monitor your progress. Educate yourself here. There are tabs at the top of this website homepage for newbies. Work all your issues here and know we are here to help. Don't be anxious.. see what the doctor says.

If you are prescribed a CPAP there will be an adjustment period and some people (not everyone) have difficulty at first. But it is totally worth it to help things you may not even be aware of--micro damage to your internal organs as a result of oxygen deprivation. Even if you feel like you sleep well and function well now, you may be surprised by the improvement you will have if you are moderately or severely compromised in your sleep breathing.

We are here to help you learn to sleep well and get optimal treatment, so don't hesitate to ask. It sounds as if you are already an intelligent, strong, and persistent individual, those skills will serve you well in this new endeavor.
