What Do Folks Do When a Cold Strikes?

Post by Kazak » Wed Feb 03, 2016 12:27 pm

Got my first cold of the new year, congested, sore throat, coughing. Finding it very uncomfortable to wear my nasal mask while congested, so I gave up. What do other folks do when sick? Any advice appreciated.

Use a full face mask. The warm humid pressured air feels nice and actually helps with the congestion. Proper sleep helps with healing.

I use mine to "blow" through the congestion, adding humidity does help... My machine will adjust my pressures automatically though...

A nice thing about CPAP compare to before CPAP: I don't get so many colds, and when I do, they are shorter and less severe.

So the consensus is keep using the CPAP, sick or not.

No, the consensus is CPAP is even more important when you have a cold.

One, you will have less colds by using XPAP correctly.

You will always need a FF MASK, for colds and congestion, or mouthleaking.

There is never a excuse for not using your XPAP every time you sleep, all the time you sleep. Jim

I keep using my regular mask, even with a cold. It seems to clear it up rather than make it worse, so I see it as a positive thing.

Nothing different since I use a full face mask. Sorry to be indelicate, but snot drizzle can be a problem so I just wash my mask every morning. I do find after long experience that either nasal or FFMs both keep my sinuses open better than without any CPAP at all... I think it's the added air pressure keeping it all open.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

When I have a sneezy, gooey cold, there's usually one or two nights I just can't keep the mask on. Those are miserable nights. I've even resorted to holding the mask up to my face with my hand, leaks be damned.

But the rest of the time with a cold, the ONLY time I feel OK is with my mask on and the humidifier (which no longer works on my machine) cranked up to the max. Fortunately, my incidents of colds went down to once every few years instead of several times a year, since starting on CPAP.

I continue to use my APAP with a cold, and I believe it helps keep my nasal passages open. I use my nasal pillow style mask. But, I had a miserable cold just after Christmas that ended up going to my ears, which seems very unusual. I wonder if the pressure pushed gunk into my eustation tubes.

For those of you that use nasal pillows, What kind of FFM do you keep as a backup during cold season?
