Kinks in New Slimline Hose

Post by Susie Kay » Fri Jan 01, 2016 6:32 pm

I have used the same hose since I started CPAP. Finally, I ordered a new one and tried it a few nights ago. When I opened it, it had kinks where it was bent in the sealed bag it was supplied in.

The first night, the kinks would not straighten out and caused the hose to pull on my mask. I had to get up and get my old hose.

The next day, I took the new hose, attached a small weight to one end and hooked the other end up high in the closet and left it hanging for two days. Last night I tried it again, but the kinks were still pulling on my mask, so I reverted to my old hose.

I don't remembering having this problem when my first hose was new. Neither of these hoses have brand names on them.

Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions?

Thank you and Happy New Year!

I haven't any experience with this, but it occurs to me that you could try soaking the hose in warm water to soften the kinks, then pull on them and see if they will loosen up a bit. Then hang it again in the manner you described for a couple days. I don't know if it will help, but it's probably what I would try if I had that problem.

I have seen the packing bends in a Climateline hose persist for a year or more.
I just ignore them, remembering how fragile the limp hose was.

The suggestion to soak the hose in warm water and then hang it weighted sounds good to me.
I would think getting the water temperature to about 130 degrees F. or so might do the trick.
Boiling water is likely a big NO-NO.

It just occurred to me that wrapping the kink in the hose with some fabric might straighten it out enough to get past the pulling on the mask problem. Velcro strips would hold the fabric in place.

Just a thought.

Maybe a buy a brand name because QC is better, warming up the hose like you said in hot water could bring the hose material back, some materials have what is called memory of manufacture.

disclaimer: I have not tried this.

now, on to the thought. I recently bought a new upright freezer, and the door seal wasn't fitting properly. they sent out a tech with a new seal, and it wouldn't fit, it was too hard, stiff and kinked, and so was the old one, to fit properly.

however, there was a note about tossing it in the dryer for a few minutes... after she'd fought with both door seals for a while, we decided to give it a shot... figuring we'd try it on the old one first, in case it melted or something, we tossed that in the dryer, left it tumbling for a few minutes, and when it was pulled out, it was soft, supple, all the kinks and bent stuck bits were back like new, and it popped right into the door groove, and has been working fine.

so, maybe a few minutes in a hot dryer then pull the hose out and lay it out in a straight line to cool.

I wonder if you blew hot air from a hair dryer on the kinks and tried to knead the kinks out as you aimed the hair dryer on them if it would help. Just don't get the hair dryer air too hot or close enough to cause melting. Or maybe you could wrap the kinked areas in a heating pad on low or medium, checking frequently while trying to knead the kinks out. Let the DME know also, maybe they will exchange it in interest of not losing a customer. I think I would also write a letter to the company about how tight their shipping pkg is for the hose. Maybe they will find a different packaging option if they get a lot of complaints. If the DME agrees to exchange it, I would go to the DME store and make them open the pkg so I could examine for significant kinks before leaving the store with it. After all, you can't get good therapy with a badly kinked hose. Good luck!

I use this $12 hose hanger at the head of my bed: http://www.amazon.com/North-American-He ... 0034CHMRU/ The last one foot of the hose hangs straight down from it and from that point there is only the small, very flexible hose that is part of my AirFit P10 nasal pillows. This lets me easily turn from side to side and sleep in any position without having to worry about where the hose is. My hose isn't kinked, but if it were it wouldn't matter.

I am using this kinky hose, but I had to change how I am routing it. It stills pulls on the mask a bit.

None of your recommendations were suitable to me, but thanks anyway for your efforts.

Contact the company you bought it from. They will replace it. While for many of us, it's probably a nonissue, but it clearly is affecting your therapy if it pulls on the mask.

Hose 1

Well, the DME sent me a replacement hose. But it was a standard hose instead of the slimline that I am accustomed to.

So, I have emailed them and in the meantime went back to using my original slimline hose which works well.

Let's see what the DME says now.

Oh, I have taken the second, badly kinked slimline hose and hung it by one end in a guest closet. I think it will take weeks to get he kinks out if they come out at all.

These are ResMed hoses. I am surprised other CPAPer don't have this complaint.

Susie, there are generic hoses with standard 22mm ends that fit your machine. They are of low quality, stiff and usually look different from the major brand CPAP hoses by Resmed and Respironics. I think you're on the right track asking your DME to replace the cheap generic hose they issued to you. Did the packaging indicate this was a Resmed product? I'd almost bet you got the generic which costs 1/3 as much as authentic Resmed Slimline tubing.
