AirSense 10 vs S9

Post by gosman » Tue Dec 01, 2015 10:09 am

I recently received a new Airsense 10 autoset after using my S9 autoset for several years. I'm a "latest and greatest" type of guy and fortunately have great insurance. So I qualify for a new machine. After about 3 weeks of using the Airsense, I'm wondering what all the fuss is about.

Positives: 1.wireless monitoring is nice and has already reported that I have leakage problems with full face masks.
2. smaller footprint.
3. easy controls

Negatives: 1. Noisier than S9
2. Same case size as the S9- so loses size effectiveness
3. smaller humidifier than S9. Constantly running out of water. Refill every two days vs 4 days with S9
4. no interchangeable parts with S9 except filters.
So I'm thinking about taking the Airsense back. I don't really see the advantage and really see more disadvantages. I might just wait and see what the next new cycle brings. Hopefully Resmed is working on these issues. Does anyone have any suggestions for another machine from another manufacturer that may fit my needs more? To me the ultimate machine would be super quite, small, large water supply, and work on AC or DC.

The basic slimline hose is interchangeable. (the non heated one) between the S10 And S9.

I don't take #2 as a minus. If you want to change the water every day, the new clamshell design is much easier to manage. I empty mine, and leave it open upside-down on a towel on my nightstand. I empty it at the same time as I clean my mask and it takes zero extra time. My understanding is that the S9 had a more difficult design for changing the water, and drying out. In addition, it is extremely easy to clean.

I have heard about humidifiers running dry in one night though. That, I would consider to be a minus.

Check the specs, you'll see that both humidifier tubs hold same amount of water - 380 ml .....the Airsense uses somewhat different humidifier settings, if you want it to use a similar amount of water as the S9 then go into settings and lower the humidity setting.

My Airsense is quieter than my S9, been using the Airsense for more than a year now and I like it better than my S9.

Smaller footprint on table than the S9

Much easier to fill water tub than the S9

Much easier to access/change the filter than the S9

The 90 degree swivel with the heated tube is a huge improvement over the S9 that just has the hose sticking straight out

Controls are easier to use as well

Both machines are basically the same in terms of operation, usage, and therapy, but the Airsense has better ergonomics for the reasons stated above, some of those small differences add up over time to make it a more user-friendly experience, but bottom line, both good machines with minor differences.

No autoramp on the S9. I know most people don't use it, but I love it. Made my transition into CPAP extremely painless.

If your Airsense is noisier than the S9, I would consider returning it and asking them to replace it. Mine is dead silent. The only sound is from the mask or the hose when I roll over on it.

If you have a preference for the S9, go for it. I'm sure they will carry parts for it for 6 or 7 more years. I'm still looking for an S9 auto backup. I probably don't need the backup, but needed an excuse to get one so I can get my Mom to try one. She will not go for a sleep study, but her regular doctor is happy to prescribe something if I can get some data to show her. I actually did get a used S9 from someone here, but it apparently was damaged in shipping and he took it back (thanks!!). The S9 was just as quiet as the Airsense For Her that I now have is.

Note: as mentioned, the filters and slimline hose are interchangeable between the 2 units. I liked the fact that you could just take the unit and leave the humidifier behind if you are traveling. I don't need humidified air in the summer that much that I need to cart both parts.

I have an Airsense 10 for Her and an old PR System one machine. I just measured the ACTUAL capacity of both humidifier tubs. Both hold 325 mls. of water. I cannot add even a ml more to the A10 unless I want rainout. In this early winter time, my A10 humidifier tank runs dry about every 5 hours, which I find totally unacceptable. I have been very ill for the last 2 weeks with severe bronchitis, which I attribute to breathing the byproducts of the dry humidifier tank before I discovered that the tank was running dry less than halfway through a night's sleep. I have found no solution to this problem, other than refilling the humidifier tank every time I get up, by which time the humidifier tank has run dry, since I tend to sleep more than 5 hours at a time, especially when sick. I have not reported it yet to Resmed or my DME because I have been so severely ill, barely have a voice to speak, and have needed to rest most of the time.

I did not have any of these problems (humidifier running dry in less than a night's sleep or severe breathing issues) with the PR System One machine that broke down after 5 years of my use.

My A10, when set on Auto/APAP setting, was noisy in that every inhale and exhale was audible. I recently switched to the Auto for Her APAP setting and have found that to be a lot quieter. I have never used an S9. The PR System One that I used for 5 years was totally quiet.
