Should i be worried about the leak numbers?

Post by wake_me_up » Tue Dec 01, 2015 9:09 am

Hello All,
Been an apnea patient for many many years and recently started using CPAP machine recently and been very excited to see the results every day. Just a little worried about the leak numbers. Can someone with more experience with these machines have a quick look and guide.
Thanks and appreciate it!

Your leak numbers are well within acceptable numbers.
The 90% leak number means you were at or below that number for 90% of the night and ResMed says big leak territory doesn't begin until 24 L/min...so you are well below large leak territory for the bulk of the night.
The % of time above red line is very small and the red line is again 24 L/min...probably what little time you were above the red line was related to a quick mask refitting. ResMed is okay with % of time being up to 29% and Mr Frowny face won't show up until 30% or more of the night is spent over 24 L/min.
While I wouldn't let 30% of the night being in big leak slide...I might let 10% or less slide as long as the time was short lived and infrequent.

So your leaks are well within acceptable numbers and unless the leaks are waking you up then I wouldn't worry about them.

Now if the leaks (even tiny) are disturbing your sleep then they are unwanted but unwanted because they are messing with your sleep and not because they are necessarily having a negative impact on therapy effectiveness.

thanks for the quick response. Appreciate it!

The leaks do wake me up. But it happens maybe 3 times a night. But in most cases, I just fix the nasal pillow mask and go right back to sleep. Is it something concerning? What are the ways to fix it? I believe it happens when I toss or turn on the bed and sleep on the side.

BTW - I have seen a huge improvement in my quality of life since i started using CPAP. Wished, i had started years back, when the docs asked me to. I am so excited about it. Now, I can keep up with wife on her shopping trips

also, one more thing, since you are here with me on this thread.

Is everything looking ok to you? Any red or orange signs?

From what is shown on the summary report I don't see anything just screaming out "fix me"
Have you looked at my Sleepyhead tutorial (top thread in the Annoucements section on the main forum page)?

If you are using nasal pillows and getting a few wake ups from the leaks when the mask moves around with tossing and turning...maybe try then size above or below what you are currently using to see if a different size is more stable.
Might try just a tiny bit snugger fit by tightening the straps just a tiny bit.
Might try a product called Lansinoh lanolin ointment/cream. Found in the baby aisle of WalMart.
Use a tiny amount and it is a bit tacky and will help seal...don't use too much or your body heat will melt it and then the nasal pillow might end up in your ear (I did that once )
It's also good to use if you are getting minor discomfort at the nostrils from the pillows.

With time we do seem to sort of get used to "fixing things in our sleep and not realizing it" so with time you may not notice so many wake ups from leaks. When first starting cpap therapy it seems like every little thing will wake us up. Tiny leaks used to wake me up but now I sleep through some pretty massive leaks.
Fortunately they don't get massive very often so I don't worry about them.

Finally if the leaks just won't reduce in number and they are too annoying...that's why they make more than one kind of nasal pillow mask...try another one.
Some masks are more stable than others.

When you have time please add your equipment to your profile like I have mine.
I don't know which nasal pillow mask you are using to offer any specific ideas because I don't know which one you are using.

Thanks again. I will add that info. Also, will try smaller sized pillows, believe I am using medium one.

I intentionally keep the pillow not too tight on my nose, keeping them at the lightest pressure. The reason behind that, I know it will sound crazy is, I am scared that if the pillows are pushing hard against the nostrils, they would deform their shape, which is not perfect already
