Could my cord be waking me up?

Post by OSAdude76 » Mon Nov 30, 2015 8:53 am

I'm about 1.5 months into CPAP. I've only had a couple decent nights sleep (slept at least 5 hours before waking up) because I'm still waking up 2-3 times a night. I really have no idea what is causing it. My mask (airfitp10 mask) seems to fit very well. I barely notice it's on now and I don't believe I'm a mouth breather as my leaks don't appear to be big. My AHI is usually pretty low, but I just wake up a few times every night and it's driving me crazy trying to know why. (I'm hoping disrupted sleep is better than apnea, but I'm not so sure)

I sleep on my side and my machine (resmed airsense 10) is to my right on a little nightstand. So my cord droops down a little before it goes onto my bed. However, I'm thinking sometimes it gets caught and the slight pull on my mask might wake me up. When I try to put the entire cord on me while sleeping, I can't quite get comfortable.

Has anyone had similar problems? How do you sleep so your cord doesn't bother you?

My cord is no problem, but I woke up on top of my hose a couple of times.
Now, I hang it from a makeshift crane above my bed.
Plenty of options for hose management, ready-made or DIY.

Wow, I had no idea they made these "hose buddy" things. This seriously might be exactly what I need (and I love that you can travel with it).

I think I'll buy it and see if it helps

Thank you!

I have one of those hose lift doo-hickeys and I love it. I use a DreamWear mask where the hose connects to the top of my head. The lift keeps my hose up and out of the way so it doesn't tug at my head and I don't get tangled in it. My resident "Cat Hat" (not pictured) doesn't seem offended by it hanging into his pillow-space either so... win-win.

Could you have 'silent GERD" (reflux) that can wake some people? What about just the changing pressures - some do better on straight Cpap when pressure changes awake light sleepers.

I don't think I have silent GERD or anything that would wake me up outside the CPAP since I was sleeping okay (minus the apnea) before the machine.

I have my followup visit with my doctor soon so I will mention the changing pressures thing as that's the only other thing I can think of!

I'll still buy the hose holder as that might be helpful anyway

Hose management has already been mentioned. Basically getting the hose up over you works quite well. Another thing you may want to consider is a soft cozy for the hose between your mask and the long hose. I find it helps as I don' t have to move it when I roll over and it rests on my neck or face.

A lot of people like the Pur-Sleep Cozy Hose Boss. See below. You can make your own if you have some of those card reels they give out conventions etc.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

How well do these work with the P10. Is there enough give to avoid pulling off your face if you extend the cord? Does anyone know?

I give myself enough slack, so I don't have to play "trout" all night long.

I have a hose buddy mounted on a dowel so it hangs above my face.

Question Frog did you catch him?

The hose hanger system removes all tension from the hose/mask, so there is no "pulling off" the mask.

But here's the thing...waking a few or even several times per night is normal. Worrying about awakenings could be a problem.
There are plenty of references like this one:
Another discovery made in the sleep laboratory is that a normal adult will wake up a few times during the night. Some may wake as often as 10 to 15 times
http://docmednews.com/2009/03/sleep-nor ... -with-age/

and this one: Arousal Norms by Age:
Brief arousals are an integral component of the sleep process
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2564772/

and Mollete's CPAP Basics #24, Sleep and Aging, viewtopic.php?f=1&t=91734&hilit=+CPAP+Basics+re%3A

So, I think a better measure of the quality of sleep might be how one feels rather than many awakenings are remembered.
