Worn out Velcro

Post by bwexler » Wed Nov 25, 2015 1:01 pm

I use the SleepWeaver Élan mask and head gear.
Once I get the new mask adjusted I only loosen the right side lower strap to put the mask on or off.
After 4-6 months the Velcro starts to loose it's grip.
Does anyone know a way to rejuvenate the Velcro so it no longer releases at inappropriate times.

I don't know how to rejuvinate velcro but you can buy velcro that will stick to itself. I use it to secure loose velcro by making a bandage to cover over where it's attached. My head is small for a lot of headgear so sometimes I have to make adjustments and I use the selfstick velcro for that. It's more comfortable than pins.

For bicycle and camping gear like Camelbaks or saddle packs I've resorted to removing old Velcro pads with a small razor knife (pluck out the stitching, don't cut a hole) and then discard them (once they're shot/frayed they are useless). Next, I buy appropriately sized replacement velcro pads at any hardware, camping supply store or online outlet. Next I use a small amount of Shoe Goo adhesive to glue the new pads on areas I removed the old pads from... been doing it for decades and it's never failed me. There's nothing quite as nice as fresh velcro hooks and loops.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Is it actually "worn out" or just filled with fibers? This subject has come up quite a few times over the years. Prevention is to not leave the Velcro apart when washing it. Leave it stuck together and the fibers won't get in there.
But, if you have a small (brass) brush or a small metal "pick" (of some kind), you can pick or brush the fibers out of the Velcro and that should rejuvenate the adhesiveness of the Velcro.

My masks have clips on the headgear and once I get them adjusted, I almost never have to take them apart.

A tiny steel crochet hook works pretty good, but eventually there is no choice
but to remove the old and sew on the new.
Hand sewing is easier than some think, and very inexpensive.

The icon chosen to represent you (sports motocross?) indicates that you may be a masculine male like myself, with very poor sewing skills and sewing attitudes. The female solutions are not often the best, nor quickest.

Again your issue here is a boringly common, predictable issue that happens to all CPAP users. If the oldies here cannot write a Forum "Stickie" on this predictable issue, I might need to do it somewhere else on the internet. Google is your best friend.

Yes - I m in Australia, so perhaps I might post the quick, easy "male" solution on my YouTube channel. If it is there, Google will find it.

Simply put: cut off or otherwise don't use the old Velcro stuff. It is designed to wear out, and designed to be easily replaced. Any paper-staple-gun can be used to put new velcro tapes. Use pliers or similar gadget to squeeze these paper-staples flat. Staples should be small, and not overlapping, to allow the tapes to bend.

If you are concerned with the metal ever interfering with your skin or facial hair, smooth it with plastic from a hot-melt glue gun.
