Nuance Pro mask

Post by Hose_Head » Thu Oct 29, 2015 12:59 pm

Three months ago I decided to try a Philips Respironics Nuance Pro mask.

After three months of nightly use, I've found this mask to be good, but not excellent. I do like the mask and find it to be comfortable, light, easy to care for, and moderately resistant to leaks. My biggest issue, until last night, was that it requires occasional adjustment during the night to keep it leak-free and aligned with my nostrils.

Last night, the wheels seemed to fall off this one. During one of my nightly adjustments of mask position one of the gel pads came free. For those unfamiliar with this mask, the headgear extends from either side of the mask, up and over the cheek bones to above the ears and around the back of your head. To relieve pressure on your cheekbones it has silicone pads embedded in the straps. And it is these silicone pads that are the problem: they appear to be glued in place and once the glue gives way, there's no way to put them back in.

I'm wondering if anyone else on the forum has experience with this mask and with this specific problem. Is there a way to reattach the pads?
I'm workin' on it.

I have heard of the gel pads coming loose just once on this forum. I don't think that there was ever a solution or way to re-attach the pads that I saw. At least I don't remember seeing it.
I have only seen it mentioned the one time. Now it may have happened to others but they didn't mention it or I missed it.

I did use the Nuance Pro for about a month but it couldn't make it to my number one preference list...mainly because of the headgear and my personal preference for as little as possible being on my face or head.
During the time I used it I didn't have anything come loose but from what I read from the one person...seemed to happen at around 4 month mark.

If it were me I would probably try my good friend Super Glue as that's my go to for when stuff comes loose.

Also, maybe strap pads would help keep it from happening again. http://www.padacheek.com/PAC_SwiftFX.html

Might be an idea. But these pads kind of negate the entire reason behind having the gel pads. Just use the padacheek strap pads instead. But it makes me wonder if it's worth it for this mask. Might be better to just get a new (and maybe different) mask!.

I'm considered trying a dab of silicone caulk. Silicone caulk can stretch and flex a bit but I'm not certain it will stick to gel pads very well. I've considered superglue but in my experience, it doesn't work too well in applications that can move and twist such as this.

Before trying glue, I'm hoping that somebody on the forum has found a solution that works. I think I'll wait a bit to see if someone else comes up with a workable solution.

Thanks for posting!

I have had the gel pads fall off not one but two of these frames. It happened the last time 2 months month into using it. I am not sure I want to spend the money out of pocket again (I think it was about $35.00 + S/H for the new frame for this little piece) to buy another frame so it can happen again. I have had no luck finding anything that will fix the issue. I don't think Superglue will work, doesn't seem to hold it- because not enough support area to glue it to. I like the mask but can't afford to buy a new frame every month or so. I have $1500 annual deductible that I never reach, so I have reverted back to my old go-to mask, the Swift FX. The manufacturer needs to come up with a fix for this or I am not buying anymore of these masks or frames. Long=lasting masks are hard to find. The Swift FX nasal cushions sometimes blow out after a few months of use, and then it's time to pony up for a new cushion if you no longer have other size cushions to trade. I drop mine in boiling water once they get leaky to get more use out of them, but they need to last longer too.

I typically use my frame until a gel pad pops out. The first frame lasted eight months and the second one lasted seven months. I wash the frame daily with Dr. Bronner's soap.

This is a great mask for me. I don't love it as I doubt I'll ever love a CPAP mask, but it is the best one I've tried. I don't route it over my head (it's actually designed to do this), but I route it down my body and up with a hose hanger (HoZer). I rarely get leakage from the nasal pillows and the mask exhaust is angled so it doesn't blow off my pillow and into my eyes like my previous Swift FX did.

The frame's quirks are not bothersome enough for me to try another mask.

I wouldn't put much hope in silicone sealant and I will note that most retail formulations exude some pretty smelly and maybe toxic fumes for several days.

I have a Nuance Pro which I use as a travel mask, after failing to make the cut for daily usage - it's pretty break-proof compared to my TAP PAP and Breeze masks.
I noted the fragility of the pillows right away and ordered a couple of replacements - medium. Since I don't use the mask regularly anymore, I'd be glad to give them to you rather than have them rot in my spare parts bin. I think they're in the factory packing.

PM me if you're interested.

I have been on CPAP therapy for just over 2 years and rarely do I get an AHI at or below 2. My pressure was set for my by the resp therapist at 8 but I upped it to 9 because in the last month I have started to get palpitations (bigeminy rhythm) again which makes me feel like my heart is going to jump out and give me an anxious feeling in my abdomen. I was just recently taken off the beta blocker because my palpitations were down to 1% and then it started up again. However my AHI has been over 5 as well.
I am not sure whether I should see the cardiologist or the CPAP office. They aren't great!
My machine is a Phillips Respironic with humidifier but I don't use it because of allergies and stuffiness. I am using the P10 nasal mask right now.
I took a screenshot from my disc but don't know how to copy it on my apple computer or iPad. I also don't know which forum to go to on the computer because it looks different than on the iPad.
Sorry for the long-winded note! Thanks for any help.

Hose,

I've used the Nuance Pro for 8 months. Love the pillows. I have a deviated septum, and get a terrific seal with this mask without irritating my nostrils.

I've had the same problem with the gel pads on the masks. First mask the pad on the right cheek came out after 3 months, my DME gave me another (no charge!), and the right cheek pad came out of that one after 3 months, too. No problems with the left pads so far, just the rights.

I came up with a solution that's working for me: super glue. I put a little dab of super glue on the lip of the pad that overlaps the mask frame. No odors, can't even tell they've been glued back on. Looks just like out of the box.

I now know to keep an eye on the pads. Just today, the right pad on one of the repaired masks started to come loose at one end, I super glued that end back down again and it's just like new again. So, on one mask the fix lasted 2 months and was able to be re-applied. The second mask is still going on the initial fix.

Highly recommend trying that, just be careful applying the super glue, and you don't have to use a lot.

Thanks for the response.

I superglued my pads back to the frame about a week ago. I've been letting it de-gas since then (haven't used it since). Will be giving it a trial, soon.

It's disappointing that this mask is so fragile. I had hoped it would be a good, lightweight travel mask. Now, I don't trust it for that purpose because the last thing I want is a mask that breaks when I'm away from my backups, and superglue!

I'll probably not buy this mask again for this reason. Philips-Respironics: are you listening?

I'm back using my old Resmed Activa LT. Solid, never breaks, I get an excellent night's sleep with it. It's only problem is that it's large, bulky, and take more time to clean each morning.
I'm workin' on it.

I'm trying to get a Nuance (with the cloth straps) or a DreamWear from my DME, but I think they have a supply of Pros they're trying to get rid of.

I would like to see the Nuance pillows mountable on the DreamWear headgear. Hope RP is listening...

Update:

I managed to re-glue the gel pads to the frame of my mask using LePage's Ultra Gel superglue. I chose this product because it is supposed to remain somewhat flexible after it has cured. I felt this would work better than a product that would cure to a rigid state.

Clean the pads and mask thorough before attempting and apply just a little bit of glue. Let it cure for at least 24 hours.

Since repair, I've used the mask for three nights and it seems to be holding up just fine. Will have to see how long it lasts.
I'm workin' on it.

Can't get the gel rings to engage my nostrils cleanly, much prefer how the P10 pillows wedge in my nostrils
