A Flex vs C Flex for Long Breaths?

Post by delfinparis » Thu Oct 08, 2015 10:37 pm

I'm trying to find the optimal setting as I like to take deeper breaths as I fall asleep. On the A Flex setting the machine would "catch" on my deeper inhales. I don't know how better to describe it, but I'm sure Phillips RemStar System One users know what I'm talking about.

I switched to C which seems to be a little more forgiving.

Has anyone found a good flex (A, C) and level (1, 2, 3) that is good for deeper breaths?

Just curious. Thanks!

D.J.

I have both a APAP from Respironics and Bipap. I use aflex at 2 on my APAP. The first breath comes in fast and breathing out is like pushing against the wind. My next two breaths, if they are smooth and regular will set the machine's algorithms right. I bet you have no problem in the mornings when you are calm and breathing regularly.

Just turn them off and don't use either one. I used C-Flex for quite a few years a a setting of 2. I finally started experimenting with NO exhale relief and found I really didn't need it........turned it off on all my machines and wondered why I didn't do that many years before.

Great idea!

I'm at work, but I'm not sure how to turn those off altogether. I can get into the admin menu - is it in there? Thanks!

Yes......should be.
From the instructions and images I have, there should be a setting to choose A-Flex, C-Flex or None.
(A-Flex is for APAP mode......C-Flex is CPAP mode)

Thanks - going to test tonight and check AHI in the morning via SleepyHead. Curious on how it affects AHI, if any!

It actually lowered mine. Not much because I was already in the vicinity of 0.5, but turning it off took it even lower.
Remember, this therapy is about "averages" or trends. One or a few nights doesn't necessarily indicate a trend, but can be somewhat informative with regard to the direction things are going.

Although I've slowed down somewhat with switching equipment and settings, over the years, I've extended my "experimentation" from weeks to months to years. Even though my masks are all the same make and model, I may still alternate some of them on a monthly basis.......or several months at a time if I'm breaking in something new. With machines, it's at least a year at a time now. Prior to five years ago, I switched them on a monthly basis.

The best thing you can do is relax and put your mind into something pleasant. Become unaware of your breathing.

You probably breathe all day without thinking about it. You should do the same in bed. Thinking about breathing makes it harder to fall asleep.
