SanPAP Experiences
SanPAP Experiences
My CPAP/BiPAP experiences have generally been good, my AHI is low, etc. I recently took my unit with me for a trip to the city.
However, I’d forgotten the power supply and so had to resign myself to the fact I would not be using the machine for the next 5 days.
During those five days I had the most restful sleep I’ve had in months!
I even dreamed!
and...
Normally, even while using CPAP/BiPAP, I experience times during the day when I am very tired.
I experienced NO TIREDNESS WHATSOEVER during these 6 days—and I was very active during this time.
I’d like to hear your experiences when you didn’t use your machine for a similar amount of time.

You won't hear MY experiences because it's never happened and hopefully never will.AfibApnea wrote:My CPAP/BiPAP experiences have generally been good, my AHI is low, etc. I recently took my unit with me for a trip to the city.

I only travel by vehicle anymore (haven't flown in over 30 years) and when we go somewhere, I take two of everything so there's no chance of me forgetting anything and having backups if anything fails or breaks.
However, my suspicion would be that you experienced some "residual" effects from the time you used it.
That's why follow-up sleep studies mostly require some nights without using a machine before the in-lab study.
I often wonder about people who relate these types of stories because after only a few months of use, I couldn't sleep without mine other than maybe in a recliner for a short while. I've even tried to take naps (in bed) without my machine in recent years and can't manage much more than about a half hour of lousy time laying there barely dozing off. To my mind, anybody who CAN sleep without their machine hasn't really accepted or embraced their therapy.

Re: SanPAP Experiences
I have only slept one night (all night) without my machine and that's because I went on a trip and forgot the long hose and it was 11 PM before I realized what I had done and way to late to do anything about it.
It was a horrible, horrible night of sleep. Lots of awakenings for various unknown reasons and some known (like the nocturia came back with a vengeance) and I had the most wonderful killer headache to wake up to.
That one night was a rude reminder of just how bad I could feel and did feel prior to cpap therapy.
There was no "holdover effect" for me or if that was the holdover effect I sure would hate to have to go through the full negative effects.
Now on occasion I have slept part of the night without the mask due to illness. Like last Sat night I woke up in the wee hours of Sun AM with nausea and vomiting and I could tell it wasn't going to be puke once and be done with it. It was several hours of puking before I could go back to sleep.
I ended up on the couch because it was closer to the bathroom just in case the puking progressed to diarrhea (which my stomach bugs most often progress to) and no way was I going to deal with removing a mask because sometimes a split second is all the warning I get.
Anyway...I always feel like crap the next day after one of my stomach bug nights. I am sure part of it is just left over from the stomach bug and part of it is untreated sleep.
I have never "felt better" in any way when I have slept without the machine. That one night without the long hose made a believer out of me.
Never mind that my oxygen levels go way low without cpap...even if I didn't feel better in general...my O2 levels were in the low 70s without cpap and that alone is enough to keep me from going without the machine unless it is simply unavoidable.

Re: SanPAP Experiences
I think you should be looking at your machine's data as your therapy may be sub-optimal and may need adjustment. With an AHI of 80, sleep is not possible for me without cpap.

Re: SanPAP Experiences
It happens sometimes. CPAP is a balance between improving your ability to sleep and in some ways disrupting it. Early on I found I needed a few hours off the hose each night for "real sleep" since CPAP was disturbing my sleep too much. Usually when I do a full night off the machine I feel pretty wretched, but sometimes I'll luck out and feel the way you describe, in the same way that I'd sometimes luck out before I had CPAP (only a few times a year, though).AfibApnea wrote: During those five days I had the most restful sleep I’ve had in months!

But the "CPAP vacations" are a lot less fun these days. I once got so frustrated with CPAP that I shelved it for a week. The first day was great. The second day I felt rough. By the end of the week I was in such horrible shape I gladly masked up again. CPAP will never give me the quality of sleep I had before I needed it, but it's better than the alternative, especially over time.

In 8 years I only slept without my CPAP when I had surgery and couldn't wear it.....a total of about 12 days.

Re: SanPAP Experiences
I went tent camping for two nights without my CPAP back in my early days. I didn't fall asleep very well and had to knock myself out with whatever was at hand... mostly beer and stuff. Not pleasant at all. I won't be doing that again.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Re: SanPAP Experiences
There has been some mention of cpap carry-over, which is or is not a "thing".
Some people have been told not to use their cpap prior to an insurance-ordered sleep test.
{{{just my opinion: clearly an attempt to avoid covering treatment. }}}

Re: SanPAP Experiences
I've had only one night off the machine. I had been traveling all day, rode the airport shuttle for 90 minutes and arrived back home at midnight, dead tired. I carried my machine in its case onto the shuttle, put it on the floor by my feet, and when I got home realized I'd left it on the shuttle. I decided not to worry about it and made the best of it. While I did sleep, it wasn't as restful as it could have been, but I did sleep through the night. I retrieved my machine in the morning, vowing never to let that happen again.

Re: SanPAP Experiences
Jim, funny you should mention . . .
When I was untreated, I tended to awaken in a "hyper" state, (probably full of stress hormones).
On beginning cpap treatment, I often felt less awake first thing in the morning.
I realized I was addicted to my own stress hormones, and once I was "clean",
I could wake up feeling normal, probably for the first time in decades.
It did take some getting used to. "High" is not a good thing, every morning.
