Swift FX getting moisture

Post by gregnga » Sun Oct 04, 2015 2:05 pm

I have been using a Swift Mirage II for quite a few years and I recently started using a Swift FX mask. When using the Swift FX I started noticing that I am getting some moisture built up somewhere and it makes a gurgling sound, which makes it difficult to sleep. Last night I switched back to the Mirage II and did not have that problem. It looks like the hose maybe thinner on the FX than the Mirage II, could that be the problem? Any ideas how to correct this. I may just get me a new Mirage II and start using Mirage II again.

Most likely conditions are just ripe for condensation in the nasal pillows. If it is just in the pillows the added moisture in your exhaled breath probably is tipping the scales.
Read what I have written about how to deal with condensation....posts number 2 and 3 in this thread

You do have some options. Which machine are you using? Still the Respironics Legacy series tank that your humidifier points to?
If it were me and I liked the Swift FX otherwise...I would add the padacheek barrel cozy to help insulate the nasal pillow.
The silicone is a little thinner with the Swift FX...that's one of the reasons it is so much more comfortable.
Unfortunately that thinner silicone also allows for the bedroom air temp to cool down the air in the nasal pillows to the point the moisture is released and we either get a cold shower out the vent holes or there's a lot of gurgling going on that sounds like a freight train in the middle of the night.
I have been there myself with the Swift FX (and other nasal pillow masks) back when I didn't have a heated hose and cooler temps meant a cooler bedroom.

I bought one of Karen's barrel cozies and it really helped. Just enough added insulation to prevent that air in the pillows from releasing the moisture. It's also super comfy to have the barrel cozy material touching the skin. Not that the silicone was that much of a problem but it was really nice to have the material which feels like silk up against the nostrils.

Probably the best money I ever spent on a comfort feature.

I ultimately gave up on the Swift fx because I hate that wet nose feeling. My room is pretty cold most of the time and NOTHING worked--no humidifier setting, no placement, not even the padacheek barrel cozy with a hose cover on the long and short hoses. The temperature difference between my room and the pillows at my nose caused condensation. During the winter it was so bad that the water sprayed out of the vent holes.

Other than that I've never had an issue with condensation, but that was truly annoying.

I may just get me a new Mirage II. I've used it for years without issues and it doesn't have this problem. The only reason I switched to the FX was because the Mirage II is worn out.
