Newbie With Issues

Post by Anthony_G » Sun Oct 04, 2015 4:40 am

Hi,

I just registered and this is my first post in the community.

I've been using my APAP for about 3 weeks now... about to start week 4. At some point in the last week or so, my machine started to get to a high pressure (for me) and stays there even after I am awake. Air fills my mask and shoots out of every crevice making farting noises, if my mouth is open my my jaws balloon out and I guess I take in a lot of the air and my stomach and chest occasionally hurt. It also runs pretty loudly, now. I can't sleep with the loud noise or my jaws inflated. Sometimes, I just take the mask off just to get a little sleep before work. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

I have a Resmed Airsense 10 with a Resmed Mirage Quattro. My ramp time is set to auto, humidity to 6, mask to full face and the pressure range is set to 4.0 - 20.0.

I thought it was supposed to increase and decrease the pressure. It seems to hang at a high pressure once it gets there. When I woke up this morning it was at 13.8 and just stayed there for a couple minutes until I cut the machine off.

Thank you for any help anyone can offer.

The machine looks at what is happening with your breathing to decide what pressure it should run at. It is hanging at the high level because it believes you require the high level to keep your airway open.

The reason why your hear the farting noise is that your mask isn't fitting properly thus you are getting major air leaking. You need to make sure that the mask seals properly on your face. A mask liner, such as Remzzz or Pad a cheek will help with this.

Your machine is set wide open which is far from ideal. If it really needs to go that high, it is wasting time to get there, leaving you untreated. It is also possible that it is chasing events. This happens with some people if your breathing tends to fool it into thinking it can't prevent the event. Your machine has full data, so you will need to get the free software and look at what the machine is doing. If you download sleepyhead and post the graphs of a typical night, people can give you some advice in how to improve your pressure range.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Wow... you have several questions all bunched into one.
- The mask farting. Those are leaks. I tried your mask once and it took me a long time to get it to work. When I see someone using your mask, I get ugly flashbacks. I would probably suggest you may eventually look for another mask, but you'll know when you are ready when you want to drop kick that sucker into the next county. I would suggest. You search here or on u-tube "taming the Quattro". Be sure you do exactly as it says. You should be able to slip the your finger under the forehead piece. Also, your face muscles relax at night and may cause a mask to start leaking... so be aware of that.

- The pressure. In the autoset mode, the machine will ramp up to treat an event, then drop off after the event. Sometimes it doesn't drop to the lower pressure... but hover at a pressure just under your treatment pressure. I would bump your lower pressure to an 8 or 10. See how that makes you feel.

- the chest hurting. Your machine comes with EPR. When you exhale, the pressure will drop... making it easier to exhale. This may help in your chest hurting. It will reduce the resistance when you breath out. Try the low setting of 1 for a few nights.

Thank you for all of the quick replies and all of the help in getting me heading in the right direction. I have downloaded Sleepyhead and uploaded some the graphs. These are from Friday night.
