Brand New Heated Tube for AirSense 10 Smells Awful !

Post by jaycee2 » Wed Sep 23, 2015 10:15 am

Hi folks, I just received my second ClimateLine Heated Tube for the AirSense 10 for Her and it smells horrible. This is brand new, out of the package. It smells like mildew and the air from it burns my sinuses. I returned the first one because of this problem and the second is just as bad if not worse.

I washed it with baby shampoo and no difference. And In an overzealous attempt to remove the foul odor from it, the second tube became a science project. Warning, don't try to steam clean the tube. It softens and melts instantly!

Has anyone else had this problem? My husband smelled a strong unpleasant, irritating plastic smell. These were from my supplier who said that no one else has complained of this. I am wondering if this was just a bad batch. None of the reviews on cpap.com mention this problem. I would hate to order one from our sponsor and then encounter the same problem.

Help!

If you smelled mildew and the dealer will not make it right, contact the manufacturer directly!
The DME may have gotten a bad batch--possibly counterfeit!
New hoses tend to smell like plastic when first removed from the packaging.
Usually airing out for a day makes it OK for me.

My humidifier tank occasionally runs dry during therapy if I forget to top it off before I fall asleep. It smells like stinky dead feet when that happens. To cover the smell, I use Clear aromatherapy oil from CPAP.com. Put a dab on a cotton ball or a diffuser pad (which you can also buy from CPAP.com) and the stinky feet odor is covered up enough with the smell of Clear to be able to fall asleep again. The tank stench eventually airs out after soaking in vinegar water with some Dawn dish soap, but it might take a few days to dissipate much. I would try this if you get nowhere from the supplier, just so you can continue your therapy without gagging on the bad smell. I hope the manufacturer will help you with your issue.

Thanks. This is the heated tube. I used the first one for one night and ended up with sinus pressure and a bloody nose. This never happens to me. I don't think trying to cover up the smell is the way to go in this instance. I am maintaining my therapy using a regular hose with a fleece cover on it. The DME may be able to order a new hose instead of giving me one from their supply closet. The theory is that it would be new and fresher. I am following up with them. Thanks for the advice.--Jaycee

I'm new to this Forum but have been active in others...
and I find the date in (2014) of this THREAD to be of interest...
for I just reported the same "odor" to ResMed and IMHO they too quickly (immediately) reported back that there had been no other such reports for this product.
I hope this revives this TREAD for there must be an answer for how such a strong odor is STILL popping up going on 4 years after "jaycee2" first started this thread!

Let me say that specifically I too think the smell I have is like a "chemical" odor...
and that I find the odor to be far stronger at the end of this heated hose to which the mask is connected... and that I use a Respironics "Wisp" mask which has a short/small diameter adapter hose that "plugs" into the end of my long heated ResMed hose/tube... and I think it's possible that the Respironics hard plastic adapter flange is possibly chemically reacting with the soft ResMed connector!??

I'm a little "miffed" at ResMed for I really like this/their new AirSense 10 [AUTOSET] with its superior humidifier together with their smell heated hose to prevent "RainOut"!!

The smell is from manufacture and being sealed up away from the air.
Once opened, it dissipates within a day or so.
Don't freak. It GOES AWAY.

I’ve been using my Airsense 10 with heated tube for a week and the smell is awful. And it’s intermittent! I fall asleep with no smell at all, and wake up due to the overwhelming chemical smell and burning sensation in my throat. There is something happening during use that is causing this smell, and it is disgusting. I’m reading that other people are experiencing this and other people are saying it’s just because it is new and the smell will go away, but it has happened every night for a week now.

I JUST OPENED A NEW RES MED AUTOSENSE 10, SET IT UP. I DO NOT HAVE THE HEATED AIR HOSE.
JUST THE NON-HEATED ONE. WHEN I FIRST START IT UP, THERE IS A VERY SHARP, ALMOST GASOLINE SMELL, AND IT FEELS VERY UNHEALTHY TO BREATHE, PERHAPS SOMETHING LIKE BREATHING A TOXIC PAINT OR MOTHBALLS.

HAS ANYONE WHO HAS THE NON-HEAT HOSE EXPERIENCED THIS? i AM AFRAID TO USE IT

WARNING!
If you are getting that plastic smell from a resmed heated tube, just like I did six months ago, even after discontinuing use after 6 weeks of use (took that long to discover cause), you may continue to smell the "burning plastic" smell long after. Today I cannot smell or taste anything except the "Burning plastic smell". I would seriously advise that you IMMEDIATELY discontinue the use of of that tubing.

I am a new user of this group today. This is only the second time I have found this complaint on the internet. I am not an expert in plastics, chemicals, outgassing, or olfactory problems. So all of this is conjecture based on my stated experience. My only hope is that when enough voices are heard someone will be forced to pay attention and verify the conjecture or discover the cause. I am so tired of always hearing "We have not heard of your problem before". The following is what I have posted in another internet site:
The Heated Tube is supposed to heat the humidified air to keep it from condensing in the tube or mask. That feature seemed to work but I discovered too late that the heated plastic tube appears to be outgassing some sort of chemicals that have destroyed my sense of smell and taste. The problem started almost immediately. Since I purchased the CPAP with the heated tubing, I first thought the terrible smell was coming from the mask plastic. I contacted APRIA, the distributor I purchased the equipment from, and they told me to clean my mask and only offered to sell me a mask cleaning machine. At my request, they sold me various and numerous replacement masks. While I was searching the internet for reviews with a similar problem, I finally came across a woman who had the same CPAP who had bought a heated tube only after using the CPAP for a long while with the standard plastic non-heated tubing. She described the same horrible smell and tried to contact RESMED with no success. I discontinued using the heated tube, after about six weeks of use, and found that while the problem went away at night I had lost my sense of smell and taste which was replaced by a continuous smell of what I call "burning plastic". I first contacted APRIA for help but was told in no uncertain terms that it was not their responsibility to deal with RESMED equipment problems and that I must work it out with RESMED. To date I have not been able to contact RESMED via phone or email. It has been 6 months and my sense of smell and taste have not returned.

The new Airsense 10 CPAP is a superb product especially with the self adjusting air pressure. My previous CPAP was a RESMED that I had to quit using since the technicians could not adjust it to my need. It kept starving me for air and I would rip off the mask in my sleep. The Airsense 10 corrected that problem.

Strong, irritating chemical smell from NEW ResMed AirSense 10 w/ Heated Hose

Post by JoyD. » Wed Nov 06, 2019 5:45 pm

I'm a 10-year CPAP user, using Respironics Remstar M-series Auto-CPAP which is still going strong. However, my "Aussie Heated Hose" which was only sold online from Australia, finally gave up the ghost & is no longer made. Not wanting to go without a heated hose, I recently decided to purchase ResMed's "AirSense 10 for Her" + the Heated Hose (from CPAP.com). I made the purchase while they were offering a "30-day return policy" but I love it so much that I am trying to avoid exchanging it for the Respironics Dreamstation until I find out what's going on.

Last night was my first night and I loved the extremely quiet operation of the machine! I used "Auto" for the Climate Control humidity & turned the heated hose temp down to 80 from 86 degrees F. I AM VERY CONCERNED WITH A STRONG CHEMICAL ODOR that smells like burning plastic resulting in irritation to my throat & mild pain in my chest!! This can't be good!!! So many plastics are carcinogenic! (I notice on the label that the machine is made in Singapore).

Of course, I don't know whether the smell (caustic vapors?) are coming from the CPAP, the Humifier, or the Heated Tube. (I know it isn't my Zest nasal mask, because I've had this one for a while & is my favorite mask that I've re-ordered for years).

Tomorrow I plan to call both ResMed & CPAP.com. I certainly don't want to continue to expose myself to dangerous plastic gases. I did a "search" on this site and found several other similar reports - all with the ResMed AirSense 10 w/Heated Hose. No one got any satisfaction from ResMed: said they never heard of that problem!

What about you recent purchasers of this machine w/ heated hose . . . have you experienced anything like this?? Any suggestions? Thx.

Make sure the power brick is well away from the air intake of your machine (on the floor) also wash the hose it’s just it’s new smell. Nothing carcinogenic to affect you

The very strong & sharp chemical or burning plastic odor was GONE when I used my new machine & heated hose the 2nd night! Thank God!! I did use it throughout he first night, though uncomfortable until I fell asleep. I just hope the residual manufacturing "gases" did no harm and don't come back to "bite" me someday!

Here is what I recommend when your new AirSet 10 arrives with the Heated Hose. Set it up, try it out during the day, and if you experience a strong chemical odor . . . LEAVE IT RUNNING ALL DAY before using it throughout the night. Hopefully, thjs will blow out tnose residual gases before you use it!

I am LOVING my purchase, now that my initial introduction is behind me. 😃

Joy

Hi - I would think a STRONG smell is unusual. When I got my ResMed, I was told to rinse out the tube and clean the mask before using it the first time. I washed it by putting a bit of Dawn in it, putting a bunch of warm water in it, and moving the water back and forth and then standing there letting it sit for a while. Then I rinsed it a few times and let it hang / drip dry. I put a hair dryer on one end and blew unheated air in it for a while. I also cleaned out the water container twice to make sure there was no contamination in that, either. I only use distilled water. I did smell plasticy something the first few nights, but I have a dead nose and didn't think it was strong. It doesn't smell at all anymore.

Like many have said, at no time should it smell offensive. I'd contact the distributor or retailer or whoever you got it from and let them know something is wrong.

Hope you're past the issue by now!
