New Mask from Philips Respironics

Today I got to see the brand new mask from Philips Respironics. It is called the DreamWear I believe. I am remembering from seeing it for a short time. It is certainly different. It is a nasal mask that looks a little like a nasal pillows mask but with no pillows, it has an opening for the nose very much like the Amara View mask. The thing that is the most unusual is the way the air is delivered. It comes in at the connector at the very top of your head and then can run along the tubes on either side of your face. There is a strap that attaches to this that stabilizes it on the back of your head. The nasal part has a vent in it as well as a few holes at the top of the head.

It was released Sept 1. I have not personally tried it yet. It is a different approach to CPAP interfaces.

I am sure the photos will be available soon. Philips Respironics said that they were listening to what the patients said they wanted in a mask. I would love to know how it works for the ones who try it out.

I'm getting a new Respironics Dreamstation tomorrow afternoon. Maybe she will bring the new mask with it. If so, I'll post pics. That's if it fits me right.

Thanks Karen, I just checked the site of cpap.com but didn't see it. Now, I am going to be like the kid waiting for Christmas.

It doesn't look like it would be the mask for me for various reasons but hopefully, folks who have greatly struggled with masks will get some relief from this one.

You're welcome! It looks very interesting to me. I like the idea since I have used the Amara View. I like the open nasal piece because I can't use pillows but I have trouble with FFMs (don't need it; have more leaks - even though they aren't large, they are bothersome; and I need increased pressures with a FFM), and I don't like the thicker headgear (the headgear feels tight even when the mask doesn't).

But I do see what could be issues for me - the pressure on the top of the head and along the sides of the face, having to have the hose over my head, and thinking about side sleeping - seems like the pressure changes would be uncomfortable.

Of course, I do suspect I may be right out of "The Princess and The Pea," but ...

I am willing to experiment with it when I can get my hands on one. All it takes for me is "interesting".
The side thingies could be a potential issue for me but I have learned that sometimes the issues I anticipate don't always materialized and issues that I haven't thought of ...do materialize.
Never know till you try something....and I always learn something...even if all I learn it was a bad idea.

The lure of the new mask...hits most of us even if we are happy with what we are using.

I also got to see the new Respironics Dreamstation machine. That has some fancy bells and whistles for sure. It is pretty advanced. The modem is internal but it is optional and removable. The filters look a little more structured than previous, and the humidifier is made so you cannot spill it back into the machine but differenly than the the PR System One machines. It also has a smart customer friendly menu with all kinds of adjustments. The pressure adjustment is still found in the clinical menu, but not hard to access. I was impressed. They have the Dreamstation Auto and the Pro (the pro is the straight CPAP) Looks pretty neat actually I won't know until I can sleep with one but they are not launching it officially until Medtrade in October.
It is quiet too. The size is flatter but wider than the previous machines it seems to me and the heated hose is recognized by the machine when you have it plugged in. Is it going to be too complex for the newbie, perhaps, but the seasoned CPAP users may find it
a new solution to help them sleep.

It looks like it might press on the nasal area causing more congestion at least for me but like you said, it is hard to tell till you try something.

For me, the lure of the Amara View is having a full mask in order to breathe through my mouth when I have a code in my node--which hasn't happened yet! This new mask looks interesting for sure; but I'm happy with my Swift fx. Also, I'm not sure how the hose on the top of the head will work...ya never know!

PR is still playing games with the names. I imagine it will be easy to convince new users they are getting the best with the "pro".

My first impression of the DreamWare mask is that it would be difficult for a side-sleeper. Which pretty much makes it a non-starter to me. I get strap marks (which are indentations) from the Swift FX flat straps. The straps on the DreamWare mask are delivering the air that you breath so it would seem they have to be even less flat. How they could not leave indentations or be comfortable when your face is lying on one of them beats me. Maybe because the straps are curved, don't have squared off edges?

This one will wait until I hear how other side-sleepers are doing with it *smile*.

I am a sleep tech, and we got these masks at the lab this week. I took one home to try. I love it to death. Really.

I'm a side sleeper, and that is not a problem at all. The air goes down both sides of the mask, so if you sleep on one side, it just goes down the other. There doesn't see to be any sudden pressure change when you move, though. Not sure how that's accomplished, don't care. The tubing(?) is very soft, and left no marks on my face, and was comfortable to sleep on.

The mask does not press on the septum like even the Nuance does. I can't tolerate nasal pillows, I always wake up with a sore nose. I did not with the Dreamwear. It seals beautifully, by the way. I'm on a pressure of 13 cm H2O, and it's just fine. It doesn't dislodge easily, either.

At the moment, my go to mask is the Wisp, but as soon as I can, I'm going to get a Dreamwear for my very own self. I'm jealous of my patients.

I used this mask for my first sleep test last Friday. I had a "split test" since the doctor was convinced I had apnea. The nurse put this one on me first and said she did not like it cause it was leaking. She then tried on about 6 more and none of them came close to this one on comfort.

We tried again and with the med nose piece and lg strap it was perfect!!!!

No leaks, cannot tell its on, slept with it great having never worn a cpap in my life.

I am a rookie but I loved it and I am a side sleeper no issues.......
