Frustrated Newbie

Post by ScootGal » Mon Aug 31, 2015 7:13 am

Hi,
I am so grateful for this site. I was diagnosed with mild OSA last month. My husband has OSA so now we have a matching set above our bed! So sexy Hey, I gotta have a sense of humor about this. Anyway, I use a nasal mask and I am having trouble with mouth leaks. I have tried a Ruby chinstrap and one of the Resmed ones. Here's the issue. I don't have a pronounced chin and a small head. So I have to really tighten the thing and I to put it more under my chin, which feels like I'm choking. Tried a full-face mask and couldn't deal with it due to my claustrophobia. I know, I'm a mess. Any suggestions? Thank you for reading this.

Some people have good luck using one of those soft cervical collars to sort of keep the jaw from dropping causing mouth leaking.

Also...just how bad is the mouth opening/leaking/breathing? Waking you up often? Causing half the night to be in large leak territory? Or is it rather minor and short lived?

What kind of nasal mask are you using and what sleeping position are you in? Also is your hose coming from above your head or from the side? Put your equipment in your profile that is always helpful and will get you the best information possible on here. Pugsy on here is always educating me!

ScootGal,

One thing to add to what has already been posted is the tongue technique.
Below is a good thread from the past covering this and other efforts at controlling mouth leaks.

If you search on the forum about the tongue technique there is a number of archived threads going back to 2006. Also search generally for mouth leaks, which has many, many more.

Check out the Amara View and see if it's something you might want to try. It takes some work to get it adjusted correctly, but when I do it's great
Sleeping MUCH better now
