Resmed Airfit P10 And Mouth Breathing

Post by CaptainRaven40 » Sat Aug 29, 2015 6:57 am

So since I started using using the Airfit P10 (which is by far the best and most comfortable mask I have had) I have major mouth leaks way over in the morning usually about 3AM-4AM. I didn't have this issue when I was using the Pilairo Q which was my first mask nor did I have it with the Respironics Wisp. Last night was the worst it has been with 9 minutes and 34 seconds with my mouth open. I am using Sleepyhead software and it says my snoring amount has gone up as well, which my wife says she hasn't noticed. The main concern is the amount my mouth is open. Are there any options for this other than a mouth guard or a chin strap? Is my setting possibly not right now that I am using the P10? I don't know I am grasping at straws on this one. Any help and/or input is greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Also I should note that I have started putting the tubing behind my pillow and run it slightly under and down the side of the bed to the machine. The only reason I bring this up is because I do have a water bed that is heated. Could this be a factor in my problem? Again I am grasping at straws. Cheers.

Snoring has increased per SleepyHead...how much was it and how much is it now?

Is the mouth breathing/leaking waking you up during the night or are you sleeping right through it and the only way you know it happened is looking at the software report?

Just how far into large leak territory did you go for that 9 minutes and how much sleep time did you have in total?

I use the same mask and had leakage issues until I used the chin strap. I found that the strap didn't eve have to be really tight.

I also tried a bunch of masks, and feel the Airfit P10 is far and away the best.
But I found myself waking up with air blowing out of my mouth, and Sleepyhead showed lots of random large leaks.
I use a Ruby-style chin strap, but it doesn't stop the mouth leaks.
The chin strap is actually more useful at keeping the P10 straps from sliding around on my hair
than it is at preventing mouth leaks.

I tried mouth taping using paper bandaging tape, and it works great. The leaks are completely gone.
I worried about the safety factor, about what would happen if I ever needed to cough or vomit in my sleep.
Then I read this post by SirNoddinOff about the safest way to tape, and his advice is wonderful.
I do it exactly as he describes, horizontal, with folded-over tabs on both ends, and a little horizontal slit in the middle.
I have tried both plastic and paper bandage tape, and I prefer the paper tape because it doesn't leave any residue.
Works great, feels safe, and no leaks.
