OT - Diabetes, Weight Loss, Etc.
Because I do have friends here and I want to share this with you.
Since my diabetes diagnosis in March, as of today, I am 0.4 of a pound away from a solid 50 pound loss!! This was very apparent last week when my mask started leaking and I realized it's because my face is thinner and the straps needed to be tightened down!
Having trouble finding clothes that fit right, but I'm still not driving and home most of the time anyway so it doesn't matter. I just swim a bit in them!!!
Still using the Trilogy as before and nothing is really changing on that front. My RT has quit and that's going to open a whole can of worms for me, but I'll figure a way to deal with it. I always do.
Anyway - just sharing the good news about my weight loss. I'm very happy about it.

Just since March? Fantastic! Good for you! I wonder what effects you've noticed if any about e.g. getting around or anything else?

Good Job!
I am sorry you lost a good RT. They are so hard to find.

Absolutely. I'm hauling around almost 50 pounds less so it's making it a little easier to get around. And because it's easier to get around, I'm moving around more. Catch 22 in a good way.Julie wrote:

I still have a LONG way to go (I was way way overweight) and still am. But at least it's going in the right direction now.
I feel better than I have in a LONG time and am overall just happier. Taken up a couple new hobbies in the last few weeks as well.

Just like cpap needs to be customized for each person, I think weight loss approaches are similar. Did you follow any particular plan or method that worked so well for you? The "diet" market is huge - just take a look at all the books on amazon. Their current best seller is Intuitive Eating, which is certainly a better approach than the latest fad diet.

I gave up sweets (mostly) and substitute more healthy/diabetic friendly sweets (like Fiber One Cinnamon Cakes over the Amish Cinnamon rolls). I'm eating fruits (strawberries a lot because again -- diabetic friendly). But I'm also eating cantaloupe & watermelon. Cutting way back on starches like potatoes, rice, noodles -- rarely eat them anymore. Dinner is frequently just meal and vegetables/fruits. I've been buying Adkins frozen meals and frequently have one for lunch.yaconsult wrote:Just like cpap needs to be customized for each person, I think weight loss approaches are similar. I am not DIETING. I just changed the way I eat. I don't like to call it a diet because I still eat things I shouldn't from time to time, like allowing myself a SERIOUS indulgence once a month -- like a trip to Dairy Queen. August's indulgence was a bowl of vanilla ice cream over cantaloupe. I used to eat that every night in the summer. But changing my habits -- it was my special MONTHLY treat.
Not a diet -- it's a lifestyle change. Kind of like adapting to CPAP. It becomes your lifestyle.

That is how my mother thought of it, And she kept it up for 40 years until her stroke/dementia kicked in. Then I did it because she would get upset if there was too much variation from the 40 years of diabetic life style.Madalot wrote:

Re: OT - Diabetes, Weight Loss, Etc.
Hurray!! *waves pom poms* I've done something similar, so I know how hard the changes can be. Due to issues with inflammation, I've also cut out all processed food, so I have to cook a lot more. That is my biggest adjustment. It's so easy to just pull a box out of the freezer when I'm busy. Now I have to have my own stuff in there.
After years of being a cookie and ice cream junkie, I've started having fruit, sometimes with cottage cheese or yogurt, for dessert. I like it better as I don't end up with the "sugar hangover" the next morning.

Madalot, you should feel proud of your accomplishment. Doesn't it feel great to take charge of your own health?

Re: OT - Diabetes, Weight Loss, Etc.
Thank you. Giving up sweets (cookies, brownies, cinnamon rolls [OMG I miss those] ice cream) -- I noticed that I felt so much better just doing that. And naturally, the weight loss helps me feel better. And it's better for me to NOT be hauling around that extra 50 pounds. And by feeling better, I've gotten a little more active. And as I get a little more active, it helps with weight loss. I'm still weak and have to be VERY careful not to overdo physically, but it does help to move more.Janknitz wrote:Madalot, you should feel proud of your accomplishment. But I'm not done yet. I need to keep losing and hopefully will.
