Can Central and Complex Apneas go away?

Post by den942 » Sun Aug 23, 2015 10:23 am

I have been using a Resmed BiPap Auto SV for eleven years. I wanted to upgrade to a newer machine. I was told to have a new sleep study done before I do that. I was in for a one night night
study. They came in to readjust my mask 4-5 times but still thought they got all the info needed. I asked about Central Apnea and she said I didn't have any Central episodes. The new machine
they want to order is a straight CPap instead of a BiPap. Can Central Apnea episodes just go away or should I be concerned about which machine I get? I've been trying to talk to my doctor for
a week now with no responses.

Perhaps you never had CA to begin with...todays equipment for testing is a lot better than 10 years ago.

Did you ever monitor your therapy with software?

Which machine (company name) have you actually been using?
The "BiPAP Auto SV" is the copyright/trade name of a Respironics machine......NOT ResMed.
ResMed has used the "VPAP" name for most of their Bi-level machines.

Yes, central and complex can go away, IF the causes go away.

However, central and complex issues are notoriously intermittent, so one night without proves less than nothing. If you have, or can get, a copy of your previous diagnosis and sleep-test results, those can go a long way toward making a new sleep doc understand the possibility of your needing a more complex machine despite what might have been a central-free night for one night.

Depending on the nature of the centrals, straight CPAP can be effective sleep treatment for the obstructive apneas when they are all that need treatment in a particular patient's case--especially if the centrals are not actually disturbing the quality of the patient's sleep. So a trial of straight CPAP may not be a bad idea, depending.

Thanks for the reply. My current machine starts making puffs of air in increasing pressure to stimulate me to start breathing. After so many seconds, it sounds an alarm. If the new C-Pap won't do this, I'm not sure I even want it.
I finally got a reply from my doctor. I was told that according to the sleep study results I only qualify for a C-Pap machine and not a Bi-Pap machine. So that pretty much ends the discussion.
