Itchy nose wakes me up

Post by EmilySleeps » Sun Aug 23, 2015 12:31 am

My nose often itches at night and causes me to remove my mask. I trim nose hairs and blow my nose before putting on my mask. I think this primarily happens when the air volume becomes high. Any suggestions for alleviating this? It wakes me multiple times a night.

Hello EmilySleeps,

Sorry you are having this problem and as I have asked this question before it must be a rare phenomenon reserved for a select few.........a different kind of torture?

I too wake at least 2-3 times a night, pull the mask away and give my nose a good rub; it's really quite maddening, but oh the relief, maybe only brief but ahhhhh

Hoping you find the remedy for this! And then please share with me!!!!

Hopeful; Steve

Hi Emily.

Not to worry too much, as it is not an uncommon experience. In my experience, it goes away on its own about half the time.

One thought, if you uses heated humidity, might be to turn down the heat (or turn it all the way off and just use "passover" humidity).

Other than that, the itchy nose inside the mask can be a test of your sense of humor, can it not?

Good luck in your xpappian therapy.

.

Well keep doing that and try this favored product - Lansinoh lanolin - http://www.target.com/p/lansinoh-hpa-la ... Api48P8HAQ

Use sparingly because excess amounts used over a long period of time and drawn into the lungs have a slight potential to cause lipoid pneumonia.

When I have the itchy problem, I put a small amount of lanolin inside both nostrils about an hour before bed and then blow my nose just before masking up. But it is also OK to use just before masking up.

Do you stay well hydrated? This tends to help with dryness and itching in the nostrils.

I'd try the P10, mine makes me itch much less than my FX with lower pressure on my nostrils.

Thanks all for your suggestions, and, especially, thanks englandsf for suggesting the P10 mask!! I just got it yesterday, and last night was much better - the mask stayed put on my face, even when I rolled over, and the tickling sensation was much less than before!! I also like the fact that it's lighter weight. Plus, the exhalation airstream vented from the mask is not as strong and it's a lot quieter.

One thought out of left field a bit. . . do you have pets? I fairly frequently wake to my nose itching and find a hair from my long haired Himalayan cat has found its way inside my mask--it most likely had attached itself to my mask prior to me putting it on. I always wash my mask before I use it, but somehow between the sink and the bed some bit of fur finds its way in. If you have a pet--particularly with long hair--you'll find that hair nearly everywhere.

I use a P10 because the nasal masks I tried made my nose feel like a static was building up making my nose itch in short order. I love my P10 Pillows.

Stop trimming the nose hairs. As they grow out the coarse ends will itch even more than the normal tapered ends.
Scratching after the itch is useful; but I wiped my face and nose vigorously beforehand with an unscented baby wipe,
to a much better effect. Another approach is to not touch it at all. REALLY!
It is possible to resist the urge long enough that the itch goes away on its own.
This really happens; and you will be surprised how effective a little extra self control can work.
Or not. Just don't beat yourself up if you just have to scratch it.

You got enough exclamation marks?

It may be true that some people are allergic to lanolin, but it is extremely rare - http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/574162_5

There are many other products that people put on their skin that have a much higher chance of allergic reaction.

Lansinoh lanolin is used by many people here and it is a big help. I hope you are not going to start throwing on the exclamation points every time it is recommended here.

Lansinoh is extremely purified lanolin, and depending on the exact allergy/sensitivity involved,
may or may not cause a reaction. Wool gave me a rash, but Lansinoh has no effect on me.
Any new product should be tested on a spot of skin AWAY from the face.
---Or not tested/used at all if severe allergies are possible.

ChunkyFrog post always has good advice however.... Stop trimming the nose hairs. As they grow out the coarse ends will itch even more than the normal tapered ends. For the male species, just don't see that as as option..(IMHO) But at least in my case I really don't think that is the problem, could be wrong, I definitely have been before!! I think it's maybe to do with the air turbulence or???

My Dentist said there is a nerve that runs along, well somewhere there, and will cause this crazy itch..And yes I have the same sensation at the Dentist office as what awakens me nightly. See!!I told you it was nerves

I also use the P10, Love it, at least compared to the dozen or so others I've tried. And it is easy to pull away and get that rub in. Did I say AHHHHH, feels so good. But as I said in a previous post, wakes me up at least a couple times each night. And anything that disturbs our sleep is unwanted and I know causes my sleep to not be as beneficial. Plus when I pull the mask, pillows away I have to put a finger over the openings so the hurricane force wind doesn't wake my bride. And that registers I think as a central as there is a cessation of air movement for however long the rub takes.

Speaking of "The Bride" If I live til the 15th it will be 43 years she has put up with me, Who woulda thunk it??

Have also used the lansinoh, I think it helps with the seal but the itch,,No

I'm open to suggestions...... Sorry, didn't mean to write a book

Sorry for "waking up" an old thread here but I have been bugged by nasal hair causing ticklish itch when using my full-face APAP mask for some years. In the end I went for a solution that is not recommended by doctors but, by jingo, it works. I used tweezers to pull the hairs out! I sanitise the tweezers in the flame of a lighter then cool them using rubbing alcohol. Then I shove the tweezers into my nose and yank those hairs out! It is painful for the first few times but after that there is no pain at all and those hairs no longer bother you.

There is a good reason doctors don't recommend this. Repeatedly pulling out hairs causes follicle damage. You will get to the point where the hairs won't grow back. The hairs are there for a reason - to filter out foreign particles, aid in moisturizing inhaled air, and keep boogers from rolling down to the upper lip.

It's much better to trim nasal hairs as needed using round-tip scissors that come in some grooming kits.
