Nose getting plugged

Post by Mikes » Thu Aug 20, 2015 10:56 am

Hi All, just wondering if any one has any ideas about your nose getting plugged up at night. I use a FFM. I have been using nasal strips which help a little. I have my resmed machine humidity setting on 5, it was at 4.5. This issues does cause sleep problems, waking up tired. Thanks

Turn your humidifier way down for a couple of nights, if not just off - it's very humid all over these days and adding to it is probably causing congestion.

Just a thought, are you still congested in the morning after you have taken the mask off for a minute or two? I ask because I was feeling congested and it turned out that it was a combination of temperature setting, humidity, exhale relief setting, and a FFM pressing on the bridge of my nose that was making me feel congested. After playing with the settings and changing masks, those days are gone. Now when I feel congested, I really am congested

Hi Julie, I haven't tried that. I was always told to have my humidifier on and that would help me not get stuffed up...maybe their wrong. Thanks

Humidity is a very personal thing - I use passover only where I fill the chamber but set it at zero.. I also found things better when I moved from an FFM to nasal pillows as I have a very narrow bridge.

When I get up its usually at 4-430 am it seems and plugged up. I use saline spray in nose which takes awhile but eventually helps. I do use per at 3 but my hose temp is 80 and humidity setting is 5. I am not sure what to try. Do you think I should turn humidity down and hose temp down?

I would suggest trying it. What do you have to lose?

I started at the same settings, maybe they are default. I increased to 6 and that was worse. I got down to 1 or 2 and that was better for a while. I then dropped the temperature and that was better again. I then went to off with water in the tank (passive) and better still.

Now I have it off, no water, and temp at 64! I finally found my perfect setting. It may change is winter.

there's ONE cardinal rule with humidity... "if it's not working, try something else".

that's it, there's no other hard and fast rules. some people (like me) prefer NO humidity, or, at least, are fine with no added humidity, and some people like to practically be in a swamp, and for some people, it changes with the weather, (which, of course, affects the humidity levels in your house).

if it's not working, try more, if you're using a little, or less if you're using a lot, or flip a coin if you're already in the middle of the range.

Doesn't hurt to try Armpit Yoga. Well, doesn't hurt much.

1. Decide which nostril you want unplugged.
2. Get in a sleeping position on the opposite side of that nostril.
3. Use a round object -- a tennis ball or doggie ball -- or use your fist to press inside of the armpit on the opposite side of the selected nostril.
4. Wait a minute or two.

Example: If you want to unplug your left nostril, position yourself on your right side. Take your left fist and press it into your right armpit. An alternative is to press on the inside of the right upper arm.

This can work wonders, often in seconds. It can be sensitive to the time of day, the body clock, and to how long you press. So if it doesn't seem to work, try it at a different time and experiment with how long you press.

A larger ball may reduce the amount of pressure you need because it has a larger surface area.

Usually I do this with the mask off. When the nostril opens, I put the mask on and resume therapy.

You can also experiment with this by sitting in a chair, twisting around and pressing the underarm on the top of the back of the chair.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I tried turning down the humidifier. I turned it down to 4 from 5. This helped the last few nights. What's weird is I have tried this before and it seemed to get worse, but I think my mask was leaking also. I may even turn it down further. I always got the clinical answer of turn the humidity up, but now I am thinking different. Thank you

I would like to move to nasal pillows. I have to work through the mouth opening at nite and chin straps most likely though, but I think it would be worth it eventually...no more marks on my face.

To 4 from 5 is not much - turn it WAY down, or even off and see what happens. It's not 'therapy', but meant only for your comfort/convenience, and not like pressure tweaking where you need to worry about too much or too little.
