Chin straps

Post by cherylann » Mon Aug 03, 2015 10:46 pm

What exactly are these used for? I just saw something on Facebook advertising a chin strap that treats sleep apnea (instead of a machine). I've seen people mention them on here, but never really knew what they are for.

A chin strap is a support device for the jaw. It helps you keep your jaw closed after you go to sleep at a time when your facial muscles fully relax. Some folks lose therapy pressure through their mouths when that happens. It is best used for nasal masks, not so good for FFM's, and definitely a NO-NO for oral masks. For FFM's and oral masks, a soft cervical collar is a better way to go.

I don't believe that a chin strap will provide effective therapy for apnea by itself although it might help with snoring.

The misleading thing is that chin straps have been approved for treatment of OSA by the FDA.
Just proof of the corruption in federal agencies.

No, just proof that FDA approval is not what you think it is.

“FDA approval” means that the FDA has decided the benefits of the approved item outweigh the potential risks for the item’s planned use.

Ie if used following the instructions it is not supposed to harm you. It may not help you either since that is not what FDA approved means.

Companies like to tout that they are FDA approved to consumers to make it look like that means it will work for them when that is not really what it means. FDA approves a lot of things that in the end turn out to be completely useless for what they are supposed to be for.

Agreed, Krelvin.
But using an ineffective gadget over an effective therapy delays real treatment, contributing to physical harm.
Of course, if this results in the early demise of a high maintenance patient, the outcome is a monetary savings.
Now I understand.

A chin strap is what made me have to go get a $300 mouthguard so I wouldn't keep grinding my teeth when wearing it. The good news is, after I learned to keep my mouth closed while wearing a mask, the mouthguard has been useful. It turns out that I ground my teeth before I knew I had apnea and it was the apnea that encouraged it. All's well that ends well?

I like the original Ruby chinstrap (velcro adjustable) and YES, I do use it with a full face mask. Some people's jaws, like mine, simply drop so far back during sleep that there's nothing to do but use a chinstrap to keep it advanced in the correct position.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I find it odd that you've been a registered forum member since 2011 and you don't know what a chinstrap is for.

She saw an ad for a chin strap advertised for sleep apnea.
Some companies advertise that their product can be used instead of a
(random unfounded slander) cpap and mask. She has used cpap for years.

Yes, I read that in the OP. I still don't understand how anyone who's been around this forum for four years wouldn't know that a chinstrap claiming to treat apnea all by itself is a nutty assertion. *shrug*

I find it odd that you've been a registered forum member since 2011 and you don't know what a chinstrap is for.

I have never used one and assumed I couldn't because I am a mouth breather, I didn't pay attention when people mentioned them. But, after seeing an ad touting their effectiveness WITHOUT a machine, I became curious. Can't girl ask for clarification?

I may not post every day like many people here, but that doesn't mean I haven't been reading. If there is some rule about having to make your presence known, please advise me and I will try to comply.
