What to do if I need to get up at night and use the bathroom

Post by Rreffner » Sat Aug 01, 2015 11:34 am

I have been using the tubing quick disconnect and tuck the tubing end under the pillow keeping the machine on. After returning from the bathroom I reconnect the tubing to the mask. Is this acceptable or should I be turning the machine off? Thanks

Doesn't really hurt the machine to leave it running.
Depending on how long you are away and leave it running ...it will register a large leak and/or no therapy usage for that period of time and the time in large leak could mess with your overall leak numbers and inflate them which might give an appearance of overall having a leak problem where you really don't. It's easy to see on the software reports though.
So it really doesn't hurt anything other than maybe messing with the leak numbers a little and it's up to you what you prefer to do.
I have always just turned it off if I got up during the night for some reason but then I also take my mask totally off as it is a simple mask that doesn't require much effort to get it fitted or refitted for a good seal.

There is a setting on most of the Respironics machines that will allow the machine to turn itself off after 60 seconds of a human not being on the other end. Again that's a personal choice.

1. Raise the seat!, put it back down when finished.

2. Get and use the software to make sure your mask or mouth aren't leaking your treatment pressure away.

3. If you take diuretics, take them at times so they will not work while asleep. No caffeine after 6 pm, limit fluids in evening. If you don't drink it you won't have to get rid of it. I have to take inderal and saw palmetto.

Used to have to go, twice a night, before XPAP, now, never. But, I make sure my XPAP treatment is working. Jim

Scoot to the edge of the lily pad and piddle in the pond.
Seriously, I turn the machine off, remove the mask, being sure the air current does not hit hubby,
and tip toe to the throne.

If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

The new quick disconnects on the latest Resmed FFM masks are a great thing. On my old Quattro FX FFM there was a cheesy snap-in/out mask fitting (elbow). A piece of non-working crap that never engaged properly, especially when you were half asleep. Now that I'm using the new Resmed Airfit F10 FFM, it's a neat bullet-proof disconnect/reconnect that works every time. I just turn my machine off, un-click the mask at the elbow connection and it's off to the commode. QED.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

In ten-plus years, I've never taken off my mask and left my machine running......for anything.
In the first place, it screws up the (therapy) leak data. And, I can't imaging wearing the mask without a supply of air being pumped into it.
So, I turn off the machine, remove the mask......do my thing......get back in bed, put the mask back on, get it seated and then the machine will auto-start from my breathing.

I never take my mask off if I need to use the bathroom. Shut off the machine, disconnect the hose from the mask, go, then hook back up and turn the machine back on. If you wear a nasal or nasal pillows mask, you can breathe through your mouth while you're disconnected from the machine; if you use a FFM, as I do, the anti-asphyxiation port offers enough airflow that you don't have to remove the mask (in my experience, anyway). But everyone does their own thing.

I see no point leaving my machine on since it won't stay on anyway s9 cpap auto.

Take mask off, machine turns off automatically in about 5 seconds, put my glasses so I can see, do whatever, check whatever... go back to bed, remove glasses and put mask back on, machine starts automatically, go back to bed.

Depends on the machine and the setting for whatever auto off function might be available.
On the ResMed machine that is the SmartStart function...starts when you take your first breaths and stops rather quickly when it realizes you are no longer attached. SmartStart can be turned on or off and if it is off you have to start and stop the machine manually.
On the Respironics machines (all but the ASV models) there are 2 separate settings..1 for auto on and one for auto off and both can be turned on or off.
On the Respironics machines auto off when turned on means the machine will stop once it senses you are not longer attached but it takes a full 60 seconds before it will turn off....much longer than a ResMed machine.

The Respironics ASV machines like my 960 doesn't even have a setting for auto off so I have to turn it off manually every time or it will blow forever. It does have auto on so that it comes on within a couple of breaths but it won't turn off at all by itself because there's no such function available.

Not everyone uses the auto on/off functions available on their machines for whatever reason they might have.
