Windows 10 and brand name software

Post by Pugsy » Fri Jul 31, 2015 8:38 am

So I hear that Windows 10 and SleepyHead work well together but
I was just wondering how our Encore and ResScan programs are going to fare with Windows 10.
I haven't taken the plunge yet for Windows 10 so I can't test things out.
Makes me worry about Encore Basic especially because I don't have a source for it anymore it they update it for Windows 10. I probably could still find Encore Pro updated but I hate Pro.
If it goes like it normally has done in the past...we will need updated versions of the brand name software.

I have 2 computers....the plan was to put Windows 10 on one of them and leave the other one alone.
Actually the plan was to upgrade the newer Win 8.1 (hate it) and see if 10 lets me enjoy the new computer more.

While I love to experiment in most situations....operating system experimenting is at the bottom of my preference list. I don't do change very well.

Can't really imagine any issues. Never tested it but I have not seen many issues outside of older printers etc

In the past every time Windows changed we had to get new ResScan or Encore too.
I guess I will fire up the Win 8.1 computer and see if I can go get Windows 10 and check things out.

Edit: Well I guess that experiment will have to wait because some dumb ass misplaced the power supply to the new laptop. I looked everywhere and can't find it. Crap...must have been the cats or aliens again.

Hope you find it, sounds like me, I took two guns apart and stored the parts in a different location for safety. They are still safe, I can't find where I put the barrels, they are safe now, for sure. Jim

I know I will find it...about the time the new one I just ordered gets here. Gotta love Amazon Prime. Oh well, never hurts to have a spare.
Of course the power stuff I have for this laptop doesn't fit the new laptop.

Your gun story reminded me of something my mom did....she swore someone stole her little 38 revolver out of her car (never mind why it was in her car) so it stayed gone for probably a couple of years....so I finally bought her another one to have in the house. Had it probably 2 months and I was looking in the cabinet bottom shelf next to her stove...was looking for some type of pot...and guess what was in the very back of that bottom shelf?
Yep...the stolen 38. She swore up and down that she didn't put it there...must have been the cats.

At least I come by my missing brain honestly....it's in the genes.

Being a dog person, I can't blame it on a cat! I could get new parts for the guns, but they are so overpriced, and in the end the SN: would be a miss match m lowering the guns value. Lose, lose! I'm fortunate, I didn't do them all. Too bad Laptops don't have standardized power supplies (12 volt). Jim

I've been trying to get a security upgrade for my Win 7 laptop, can't check update from Microsoft, I'm guessing they don't have enough servers or bandwith to keep their products current, and upload Windows 10 at the same time. So naturally, dump the people that paid for your products. Jim

So, just upgraded to Win 10.
SleepyHead 9.8-1 (open and broken GL) as well as ResScan 5.4 appear to work fine!
Actually, ResScan seems a little faster, but it's still its clunky old self.

Thanks Jay. I will try Encore next week once I get the new power thingy and get Windows 10 installed.
The new laptop is deader than a doornail right now.

I chatted with a guy at Costco today (not an employee, another customer); he said he downloaded Win 10 and hates it. Said he lost all of his "favorites" and now has to retrieve them by going through IE. (I hate IE and haven't used it in years.) Granted, this is one person's experience, and maybe others like 10 and have no problems with it. Still, I have no plan to download it. I still use Win 7, and it's fine by me.

Don't know how true it is, but I've heard that any Win version with an even number sucks. So unless the reviews on 10 a few months from now are that it's really great, I'll stick with 7 for as long as possible. (I freely admit to being a technological dinosaur. )

if you were to upgrade, (and I've tinkered with it, and it looks mostly like a little change to 7.... like they're trying to forget about that abortion that was win8.

but one of the things that the mozilla/firefox CEO is furious about is that the upgrade to win10 sets your browser preference to their new 'edge' browser, you can go change the preferences back to firefox or chrome or whatever, but it's a little more tedious than it was before.

Favorites are imported into Edge by simply going to "The Hub"/" Favorites", selecting "import from", and choosing from where. They are not "lost".

But beware, Win 10 evidently writes to the SD card causing ResMed machines to want to erase them when reinserted. Lock before downloading to SleepyHead or wherever.

That would seriously piss me off. I always uncheck any additional "helpful" software that's bundled with anything I choose to download (like bing, which I see often as bundled software); if Win 10 just changes the browser automatically and you have to work around it to use the browser of your choice, they can keep the whole package.

I always wait a good few months with any new "next best thing to come down the pike" software. I'd rather let other people have the issues and wait for the company to find and fix all the bugs before I go near it. Keeps me sane (well, a little, anyway. )

Maybe the guy I spoke with just needs more time to fiddle around with 10 to discover that tidbit about his favorites.

Screwing with the SD card sucks... I use a Respironics machine, so it wouldn't affect me personally; but that's good to know.

Great....something else to try to remember to do that I never had to do before. Sigh.
I do good to remember to download once a week. Have been using the S9 lately.
Oh well, it's not like letting the machine erase the card is that big of a deal anyway.

The new laptop with Win 8.1 doesn't really have all that much on it anyway...hadn't moved my stuff over to it yet. I have SleepyHead I think and nothing else. Think I will do the upgrade to Win 10 and see how it goes and go from there.
