Does Machine Score More Events When Lying Awake?

Post by RobertS975 » Thu Jul 30, 2015 12:37 pm

OK, to set the stage for my question... ResMed S9 Elite CPAP, pressure 10cm, P10 pillows... excellent general scores since Feb 2014. Here is something that I have noticed too frequently to just be a coincidence: If I get up to use the bathroom an hour or two before the alarm is going to go off, say 430AM or 5AM, I go back to bed with my machine on, but frequently will fail to fall asleep again. (Probably because I had such a great night of sleep already!) But I have noticed that lying there with the machine on while awake will cause "events" to be recorded at a much higher rate than the previous sleep hours... usually CA (central apneas). What is actually going on here? Anyone else notice that there are more "events" while lying there awake with the machine going?

The machine is looking for changes in air flow.

Awake breathing is much different than sleep breathing.

I suspect it has to do more with the individual and their own breathing patterns (awake vs sleeping), not to mention their varied medical conditions. I've heard cases on this forum that could go either way. Factors include lung congestion, sleep positions, REM stages, chronic pain, neuropathy... the list goes on and on. Generally speaking, there will be differences between the states of wakefulness and sleep, also between the various sleep stages... again I think that's dependent on the individual.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

If there are clusters right before sleep and before waking. It could be SWJ ( sleep wake junk) if that is the only time you see them.

OK, I have not run across the term SWJ again... but it has indeed been discussed here before: viewtopic/t99672/Is-This-SleepWakeJunk.html

Thanks!

Disregard the data unless you are sleeping, the machine is made to track sleep data, waking data isn't useful. Jim

Proper XPAP treatment usually stops nocturnal demands, watch fluids before bed and in bed. I use saw palmetto, even so my PSA test numbers are going up, so I also now see a Dr twice a year for a checkup. Jim

As usual, members are answering without understanding the question.

What do you mean by "much higher"? One per hour? Five per hour? 50? 100?
