When people say "My travel machine ..."

Post by Cardsfan » Tue Jul 28, 2015 12:42 pm

what do you mean? Did you actually buy a new machine specifically for travel, I guess one of those small ones? Or do you take an old one and leave the newer, good one at home so it is safe? How do you end up with 2 machines to start with, unless you've been on this a long time? My Ins. will replace my current machine after 3 years. So I have a long time to go before I have a spare.

Both, take your pick. People that are tired of lugging around their clunky home machine, or simply have severe packing space restrictions will purchase one of the small travel specific machines such as the HDM Z1, or the Transcend. Or some folks have a spare home machine that is small enough and light enough that it is good for travel purposes. Many folks get a new machine when their insurance will allow it and keep their old machine as a backup device, or a travel device so they can leave the home machine at home. Some standard home machines lend themselves more to travel as they might be slightly smaller or lighter, an example being the Intelipap. Another common option for travel is take your home machine, but leave behind the detachable humidifier to save packing space, some trips are short enough, or the destination is humid enough that packing the humidifier section of the machine is not necessary.

If you travel frequently, and packing space is at a premium the idea of purchasing a dedicated travel machine that is small and light weight makes more and more sense.

I bought my second(travel machine) off my home town Craigslist. It also serves as a backup in case my good one goes belly up. Have used it for travel now on about 10-12 trips. Love it...

My travel machine is my backup machine. it duplicates my current one and I purchased it without insurance so I wouldn't ever be without one in case of equipment failure. If you have a local DME, they generally can be depended on to supply a short term replacement in case yours needs to be sent in for service / replacement.

On-line DMEs are a whole other thing and you may be looking at several days to weeks in similar circumstances.

In my case, I frequently don't breathe on my own for one to three hours each night and my machine ( an ASV ) kicks in an does it for me. I really don't want to risk being without it at all.

BTW: Here is a pix of one just like my other travel machine

Some people travel a lot and look for a smaller/lighter machine. Personally I am an infrequent traveler and I have a duplicate of my primary machine. If something goes wrong with my S9 I have a duplicate and the H5i is interchangable.

If flying, I use my backup machine. If driving like this coming weekend to San Diego, I will take my S9 VPAP Auto since I will use the humidifier. The S9 is actually lighter and smaller than my backup machine (M-Series)

I don't see much of a point in buying a specific most often less capable travel machine as I don't travel that much.

When I say my travel machine, I mean my System One Series 50 machine that is fairly high miles and that the insurance company still technically owns. It is my backup machine now.

My primary machine is a System One Series 60 machine that I bought cheap on Craigslist.

Cardsfan,

Also wanted to be sure you knew about the side cover for your AirSense machine that would allow you to use it without the humidifier tub in place. If you need to travel and don't want to have to take the humidifier tub with you for space reasons you can purchase the side cover and have a slightly smaller travel package with your AirSense.

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... cover.html

It comes in either Black or White to match your machine.

Other than the first machine and initial supplies, I've purchased all of my additional machines and supplies out-of-pocket. I did use my first machine and mask for about a year before I started buying additional machines and supplies. I liked the machine design ("Legacy" models) that I started with, so I kept buying additional machines over the years......and they kept getting cheaper which was another advantage. They also use the same parts and software.

Anyway, you can always purchase more of "whatever" out-of-pocket. Lightly used machines are cost-effective and quite available if you look around.

As far as "travel machines", it's handy to have multiple spares. I haven't flown in over 30 years (had enough of that with a software company I worked for in the early '80s). So, all our traveling is by auto and I always take at least two of everything when we do travel. I take whichever one I'm using in my bedroom and a spare machine.....just in case.
Murphy's Laws apply to this therapy, too.

Tangle- I ordered that side cover. I haven't used it yet. I like the humidifier.
We are getting ready to make a big road trip. I have spares packed of everything except the machine. If I had a spare machine, I'd pack it too. This will be my first time going thru airport security with it. Hope all goes smooth with the TSA.

If you have a copy of your prescription, take that, too. If you've uploaded it to some place like CPAP.COM, if something happens to your primary machine, you could have them ship you one overnight. Or, you may be able to take it to some other DME to see if they can help you out.

Thanks, I have a copy of my prescription in my travel bag. Our host has my prescription already, so I can order online if I want to. But our host is not in my network. Also, my DME provider is Lincare and they are nationwide, and in my insurance network. Lincare said I can have service from any of their locations, they all have access to my prescription.
