If PAP prescription written in different state than I live
If PAP prescription written in different state than I live
I just had some new sleep tests done and a prescription written for a different type of machine. The doctor is in a different state than I live and is wanting a doctor in the state I live in to sign the prescription. Why is this necessary?

I was thinking it wouldn't matter either. But from my understanding, I was told something to the effect....that a doctor in a different state is not licensed to practice in another state.
Does this make sense?

This is correct. Doctors are licensed by state and if they move to a different state, they have to apply for another license.ada wrote:that a doctor in a different state is not licensed to practice in another state.
But generally, pharmacists and DME (equipment suppliers) accept and fill prescriptions from doctors licensed in other states.
Think about cpap.com, drugstore.com and other internet providers. They accept prescriptions from doctors in 49 states that are not licensed in their state.
Your doctor is overly careful or a pain in the keister.

Hmmm...Would it make a difference whether my insurance is covering it OR if I am paying out of pocket?

It depends on the doctor's state of mind (or mindlessness).ada wrote:Hmmm...Would it make a difference whether my insurance is covering it OR if I am paying out of pocket?

I would be pissed if I (or my insurance company) paid for him to do a sleep study and then he wouldn't write the damn CPAP prescription. He would get a piece of my f***in' mind.ada wrote:...I wonder why a doctor would feel the need to be "overly careful"

If I went with one machine ,my insurance would cover it...
However, a more advanced machine was decided on, so now I am paying out of pocket.

What model are you buying? Have you received advice from the expert members here on the model?ada wrote:a more advanced machine was decided on, so now I am paying out of pocket.
From whom are you buying the CPAP? Have you comparison shopped the internet suppliers? Many of us have found it advantageous to buy from internet suppliers when we self-pay.

I believe it is the ResMed S9 VPAP Adapt OR the ResMed Aircurve version of this
Re: If PAP prescription written in different state than I live
I was told I could get it cheaper at 2nd Wind or 1800CPAP.com
I would be appreciative of any help, trying to get as soon as possible.

Good ideas. I like the "New/Open Box" deals that secondwind.com sometimes has. "Lightly/used" are also good and sometimes you can save a lot of money.ada wrote:I was told I could get it cheaper at 2nd Wind or 1800CPAP.com

Try this, start a new thread with subject "Prescribed VPAP, Self-Paying". Let's see what the patient-experts say.
Now about the prescription, how reasonable do you think that doctor is? If you told him you were self-paying and buying from an internet supplier, do you think he would sign? Do you have a family doctor (or any doctor) in your home state whom you think would gladly sign?
