Recomendations for a Travel CPAP?

Post by USMC - Retired » Mon Jul 06, 2015 9:28 am

Hey Y'all, New member here, site looks to have some good info and folks in the know. That being said, I need some advice.

I am shopping for a new CPAP as my current one is acting up and I'm using a older backup machine at home that is too bulky for easy travel. I travel a lot in my job mainly by air and would like to know what others who travel frequently are using and how they like it. Important features to me are compact size, ease of use, reliability and the ability to run off of some sort of battery pack for at lest eight hours in case of power failures.

Don't know but wanted to say thank you for your service! My hubby did 3 tours in Nam (USMC).
Morbius, are you bored?

Thanks Krelvin, that is good info and pretty much matches my experiences on long flights but no one there was really discussing travel CPAPs, it was more about in flight power issues. What I'm looking for is folks experiences with different travel sized CPAPs.

The problem is most travel machines are sub-standard to regular machines. A lot of people just travel with their regular or backup machine rather than buying a specific machine just for travel.

One source of info might be from cpap.com where they have user comments from people who actually bought a travel machine.

The URL: https://www.cpap.com/cpap-machines/trav ... achine.php

Even there, a lot of what they are showing are regular machines that also are used for travel. But for each of the "travel" machines there are reviews from purchasers of the machines.

The smaller the machines get, the nosier and less capable they are (less features).

Not looking for a travel specific CPAP but one that is at least travel friendly. I have been using an AeroMed Everest2 but it recently stopped working properly and I think it may be due to wear and tear from my busy travel schedule. In it's defense it is over five years old but the ResMed unit I've fallen back on is over ten years old and still works fine.

I use a Resmed S9 VPAP Auto but I would most likely get a PR System One Series 60 if I were traveling a lot and needed a battery option. The difference is that the PR system is 12v and Resmed's are 24v and need a Converter.

There are some discussions on the board about using them with batteries etc... but that means you would be carrying a battery as well.

I do travel with my Resmed but I only use it in hotels and at relatives houses, never using a battery. I am looking at a battery standby at home, but that is not for travel purposes.

What machine are you using now?
I haven't flown with my machine but travel frequently and take my Respironics 760. I use a Poweradd Pilot Pro battery (without my humidifier) for times I'm not at electricity and it has worked well for me. It will last me 2 nights with my Epap 11 / Ipap 15 but I'm usually able to recharge after one night so I'm not usually running it for 2 nights. The battery has a connector that plugs into my 760 series.
If you decide on a regular machine Respironics are 12 volt and are easier to run on battery power than the 24 volt Resmed which I believe require an additional converter.

M son travels on his motorcycle and takes his cpap machine , a PR system 1 and a very small battery. If you want compartmentised... a motorcycle saddle bag is it He stores the cpap in one saddle bag along with the battery and supplies, and his clothes in the other. If you take a look at cpap.coms website you will see the small battery that he uses there. The PR system 1 machine is his primary machine, so its not a smaller version like your Everest
Cheers and welcome to the best darn forum for us hose heads, you will get more great info here than anywhere else.
Nan
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Yes, I'm using that one. Mine worked right from the beginning after initially charging it. I'm happy with it and thinking about getting a second one. While I don't back pack I do appreciate the portability of the battery. I travel and sleep in my truck at times and have found a 12 volt computer charger that allows me to recharge while I drive the next day.
Some people have had difficulty getting one that worked for them. If you get it from Amazon and have problems, I believe they will allow you to return it.

I took my Airsense on the road a few days ago, and wished I had brought the Intellipap as well.
Hotel rooms were very hard to find (long story)
Hubby would have slept in the car, but 400 clams is to fudging much to pay for a battery for my good machine.
BTW, several of the mini "travel" machines require expensive auxiliary power supplies as well.
You pay for tiny--in cost and comfort as well.
My Intellipap plugs right into the "lighter" plug! And the battery pack was very reasonable.
Nice at a rest stop. No headache later.
