I need battery help

Post by Karenjude » Sun Jul 05, 2015 9:59 am

I have a Novacell ion battery that I used for my Resmed Series M while camping. I now have the Resmed AirSense 10 Elite and none of the adapters fit into the back of my machine. I know absolutely nothing about batteries and nothing that I am reading makes sense to me. I called a CPAP online company and they sent me some cables; one has a cigarette lighter plug on one side and an adapter that fits into the AirSense with a box in between ( inverter or converter I don't know). I tried plugging the cig lighter end into my current ion battery and then to the back of my machine but the machine did not work ( my battery was fully charged). The old cable that I used from the battery to my series M was just a cable, no box in between. Is there some type of cable I can buy that would work? I'm reading something about reverse polarity changes and all sorts of other stuff. Thinking that this battery might not with the new machine but not sure.

They did include cables that hook onto a marine or deep cycle battery. I've done some research and am totally confused about that too. Can some tell me where to buy one and the exact brand and size I need to buy?

My mind just cannot absorb this battery info and any ( very simplified) help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Couple clarifications...
M-Series is a Respironics device which runs on 12V. It is easier to connect to a battery source than a Resmed machine which is made by a different manufacturer.

Not sure which battery you are actually using, but it is quite possible it is not large enough and has enough Amp/Hours in it to power a 24v device.

The Resmed machines don't work off of 12V and need a Converter (not Inverter) to change the battery voltage from 12v to 24v. This is much more efficient than using an Inverter but either way uses and requires a lot more power available in the battery.

You use camping doesn't provide enough info on how much battery you can use. Hiking in and camping in a tent is quite different than driving to a camp site and camping there.

I have several links on my resources pages which have some examples...

With more info on what your goals are we can point you in the right direction.

Thank- you for your quick response krelvin. I did read the info in your attached links and found them helpful - especially the one on the AGM battery. I know just what I need to buy now if I go that route.

That would be my second choice though. We do camp in a camper but I do sometimes travel by plane or go places where bringing a heavy battery is not practical.

I found more info on the Novascell battery I have. It look like it is a 12 volt just like you thought. I did find info on it at this site: http://www.thebatterygeeks.com/CPAP-BiP ... s-s/87.htm

Some info on it:
Compatible with ALL CPAP/BiPAP/VPAP systems
Upgraded N/C-20000 with an extra 40w of capacity & built in overload reset!
Run time without Humidifier for most users 3 to 5 nights

NOT APPROVED FOR INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL

Price: $550
Inverter Price: $50
For All Non 12v Systems (including ResMed) our Inverter is Required

Here's the inverter they are suggesting:
200 Watt Customized DC to AC Inverter with 5V USB (Required for all Respironics BiPAP's and ResMed Machines) when used with CPAP battery packs.
DC input voltage: 12V
USB output Voltage: 5V
Output Power: 200 Watts
Surge Power Capacity: 500 Watts
No load Current: 0.15Amps DC
Battery Low Shutdown: 8.5V +/- .5V
Thermal Shutdown: 55 deg C +/- 5 deg C
DC Input On/Off Switch
Weight 15 oz
Dimensions: 4.38 x 3.5 x 1.6 in.

I think I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they have to say. In the meantime, I'm going to buy some of the components of the heavy battery solution to maybe have as a backup in the trailer if the Novascell stops working ( it's probably 10 years old and has served me very well).

Thank- you very much for your help. If you have any additional feedback or suggestions I would certainly welcome them. Others don't seem to find this complex but I sure do!

take your machine to your car, and plug the resmed 24v converter into the cigarette lighter there, (make sure you turn on the switch on the back of the plug, and see if your machine works. this will verify the function of the machine, and converter combination, and narrow down any problems to your battery.

Thank-you palerider. I wasn't aware of the button on the cigarette lighter end. I tried it again and it works! Very appreciative of the help from this forum!

Since you have a set up that works with your old machine maybe you want to pick up a second hand resperonics as a back up and travel machine.

hi black spinner. My old machine still works so I could consider using that as a back-up. It's over 5 years old and I was having problems with recurrent vascular rhinitis that I suspected was related to the machine. Hence a new one. No episodes of rhinitis yet so I'm crossing my fingers.

Camping is only a few days - having experienced floods, raccoon raids and other fun camping experiences in the past pre cpap days, I would certainly use an old machine rather the my brand new state of the art machine.
