Ammonia smell in my nose

Post by Dirtyhands0321 » Sat Jul 04, 2015 3:28 pm

Hello for the past few weeks I have been noticing an ammonia smell when I take a deep breath through my nose. I clean my nasal pillow cushion daily with mild soap and hot water and air dry. I'm very hygienic with my apap and only use distilled water in my humidifier. I read somewhere online that the ammonia smell is because of a buildup of bacteria in my nasal passage do to moist environment. I'm wondering if any have experienced this and if I should run my apap without my humidifier to dry out my nasal passage?

Thanks for your help and input!

Do your hands get anywhere near your nose?
Did I really say that out loud? I'm sorry. I guarantee someone who can answer your question will be along shortly.

I think that I would consult with a healthcare professional if I experienced that.

Seeing an ENT doctor about this problem might be a good idea. Browsing through some literature on this issue shows some possible causes: sinus infection, GERDS, improper pH in the intestines, etc. Not something that would be usually discussed on this forum.

Some nasal infections can result in snot that smells like chlorine.
I believe it is from the lymphocytes killing the microbes.

Thanks, everyone! I will meet with my ent doctor. The story behind my name is simple, I'm a technician who works in high containment laboratories on sterilization equipment and decontamination equipment so I have dirtyhands!
