Resmed AirSense 10 Autoset Experience v Respironic System 1?
I am getting a new CPAP/APAP machine after 5.5 years of using a Respironics System One w/ A-Flex. I am going to a sleep specialist tomorrow for prescription for a new machine, because mine is dying quickly. My DME said the replacement machine they would provide me is a Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset. I could switch DMEs, I suppose, if a Respironics machine is preferable, but it would take longer and I need a new machine. Medicare only pays for a new machine every 5 years, so I want to do the best I can to get the "right" machine. Thank you for any advice, information, or suggestions.

Re: Resmed AirSense 10 Autoset Experience v Respironic System 1?
I haven't tried the A10 myself but if I were getting a new APAP today I would likely insist on the Resmed Airsense 10 auto set for HER, even though I am not a her.
I am using a PRS 1 series 60 ASV now and I liked the old Resmed S9 better, but they are very different machines. The series 60 is almost 5 years old and should be due for an update soon. The Resmed was new the end of 2014.

What is the difference with the HER version? I am female, so it would be appropriate.

Re: Resmed AirSense 10 Autoset Experience v Respironic System 1?
The AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her model has an extra apap mode available that will flag RERAs and is supposed to work a little differently than the regular apap mode (which it also has available).
So the AirSense 10 AutoSet has cpap mode and apap mode available.
The AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her has cpap mode and 2 different apap modes available.
How important is that extra special apap mode? I don't know but I have always been one to try to get all the options I could possibly get just in case it might come in handy.
The exhale relief on the ResMed machines is going to be a little different than what you have had on the Respironics machine but I don't see it being a problem. I actually liked it a little better myself (tried it on a S9 machine).
Some minor differences in how each brand goes about doing its job (different algorithms) and minor differences on how they flag or don't flag events but overall none are deal breakers or makers.
While I have not owned the new AirSense model I have owned both Respironics and ResMed in the other models and they are both great machines.
If it were me and I was in the market for a new apap machine I would go with the new AirSense 10 AutoSet for her just to have that extra apap mode...don't know if I would really need it but would be nice to have that option plus that's the only option that flags RERAs.
Also... I think that ResMed machines are a little more quiet. Not a huge difference but I think there is a little difference.

my totally off the cuff feeling is that the adaptive minimum pressure in the for-her mode is the best thing, and should be in all autos.Pugsy wrote:How important is that extra special apap mode? instead of up and down all night if your min pressure is too low, it'll raise the minimum if you keep having events at a lower pressure... thus probably giving a smoother night.
and, I agree, the resmeds are a bit quieter.

Thank you for your informative responses, Pugsy, palerider, and bwexler.
I am also wondering if the dr. prescription for a new machine needs to specify to include a humidifier and / or software. I currently use a humidifier.
I am seeing a sleep dr. tomorrow (Thursday) after 2 sleep studies in which I got no sleep without CPAP and only 2 hours with CPAP, so not a successful titration for APAP. I also don't get to sleep with my current machine for 4 to 6 hours, then I need to sleep for 12 hours, then I am still tired after getting up. I posted about that on a different topic on this forum.
I can't make any changes to the settings on my current Respironics machine. It is dying after 5.5 years of use. All I can do is to plug and unplug the electric cord so I can get air. The problems getting to sleep started before the machine stopped functioning properly (or at least before it was obviously malfunctioning).
Thank you for any help, ideas or suggestions.

I am a Male and got the AirSense 10 For Her about 5 weeks ago. I set it to the for her mode for the first 30 days and had good results. I have now reset it to regular APAP and will follow it for another month to compare. There is a caveat in the clinical manual which I copied below. I am not sure exactly what it means if your necessary pressure is above 12. I'm sure someone on the forum can explain the difference above a setting of 12.

Thank you, joelrk35. I can't see the image you posted. If you want to PM me a link, that may work better.
My APAP range has been 10-16 in the past and, as of the last reliable data obtained from the SD card, I am spending a lot of time close to 16.
I had 2 sleep studies last week, during which I slept a total of 2 hours. They were able to titrate only to 11 and told me I should get a CPAP with a pressure of 10. I needed a bathroom break after 2 hours during both studies. On the 2nd night (CPAP titration), I never went back to sleep, so they never got above 11. I am seeing a sleep dr. tomorrow and taking 2 previous sleep studies and the most recent compliance data from the DME (a year old), so the dr. knows that a constant pressure of 10 sounds ludicrous to me. I hope I don't need another sleep study to get a prescription for a machine. I don't know if Medicare would pay for it and it usually takes me 4 to 6 hours to get to sleep currently, so I was lucky to get 2 hours sleep at the sleep center, soon after they put the CPAP on.
Thank you for any further suggestions, etc.

The Resmed AirSense 10 comes with the humidifier attached so no need for a separate RX.MarylandCPAPer wrote:Thank you for your informative responses, Pugsy, palerider, and bwexler.

Re: Resmed AirSense 10 Autoset Experience v Respironic System 1?
For me the algorithm of the ResMed Autoset breaks up obstructive events much faster. When the machine detects flow limitation it kicks in sharply and holds the airway open. For some people this will cause sleep arousal or even awakening. This has not been a problem for me. I used the System One Auto for a year prior to using the ResMed Autoset. I experienced a lot of OSA clusters with the System One. The System One would not raise the air flow fast enough to break them up for me. My overall AHI is a little better with the Autoset. Both are good machines but the algorithms are definitely geared differently. There are numerous discussions here that you can learn others experiences.

How is the machine malfunctioning? Does it beep, turn off and then show an error message? I have the same machine and had that problem. When I mentioned this here, people told me about a fix that I successfully applied as it is a known problem with this model that was corrected in the 560P.
It's very simple after getting the cover off. You just add a screw into a plastic post that is already there that holds the air lines against the sensors.
See my post about it here with pictures: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=106093&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
The toughest part is having a long enough torx driver of the correct size to get the two screws out that hold the case together.
You may be able to easily fix your current machine and keep it as your backup - we should all have a backup machine.

Re: Resmed AirSense 10 Autoset Experience v Respironic System 1?
At some point, there were three beeps and it may have said Service Needed. I "fixed" that by taking out the SD card, turning off the power, then power on and insert SD card. Things worked normally, I think, for a while.
Now, the only thing I can do is unplug the machine to shut off the air flow and plug it in when I want to sleep.
The machine has shut off airflow while I had the mask on several times. I unplugged and plugged the electric cord back in and the air came back. With the Airfit P10 nasal pillows mask, I barely noticed that the airflow had shut off, and I did not suffocate. That mask is so quiet that I sometimes take out a nasal pillow just to check that the air is blowing, and it always is, except the couple of times there was no airflow.
