Additional Bennefits of CPAP

Post by TangledHose » Mon May 25, 2015 10:35 am

This excerpt is taken from the article link found up above in the sleep apnea news section "Science Q & A"

Q. Sleep apnea is treated with positive airway pressure that helps to lower systemic inflammation. Might that prevent some of the other problems associated with the disorder?

A. Doctors have plenty of good reasons to persuade people with sleep apnea to get it treated. The widespread disorder causes disruptions in breathing at night, which can ruin sleep and raise the likelihood of problems like obesity and fatigue.

The standard treatment for the condition, a mask worn at night that delivers continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, significantly improves apnea, even though many people don’t like to wear it. But the mask may do more than restore normal breathing at night. Some research suggests it reduces inflammation, benefiting overall health.

Many studies have looked at the link between sleep apnea and high levels of inflammatory markers. To get a clearer picture of the connection, a team of researchers recently carried out a meta-analysis that pooled data from two dozen trials involving over 1,000 patients. It was published last month.

The data suggested that treating apnea with CPAP significantly reduces levels of two proteins associated with inflammation: tumour necrosis factor and C-reactive protein, or CRP. Sleep apnea is a risk factor for several severe chronic conditions like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. It is not clear whether apnea helps drive the development of these disorders or vice versa. But reducing inflammation may be one way in which treatment with CPAP reverses some of the long-term consequences of the sleep disorder.

I would not consider that an "additional" benefit. IMO, it's one of many primary benefits.

We don't breathe just for the sake of breathing nor for the sake of sleeping. We breathe to deliver oxygen to every cell in the body and help keep those cells healthy.

whatever floats your goat

Definition: Phrase used instead of whatever floats your boat to describe that any course of action is acceptable with the person that says it. Goats are more bouyant than boats. Therefore the phrase is more flexible than boats. And better.

Example #1 in conversation:
Person 1: I should... eat a pony. And a small child.
Person 2: Whatever floats your goat, man.

Example #2 in conversation:
Person 1: It's not an additional event, it's a primary event.
Person 2: Whatever floats your goat, ma'am.

I wonder if my cancer would have been worse if I had not been using cpap for the last five years.
Nice when the important things fall into place.

I've been having very naughty dreams when using my CPAP. I consider that an additional benefit.

Good, let's keep it up.

No, above the skin line, hair is not made up of cells. That hair is made up of long chain amino acids called keratin. There is no longer a cell nucleus present so it is wrong to say hair is composed of cells.

at least when I creatively edit someone out of context, I have the decency to put in an ellipsis so people know something is missing. want to comment the amount of living in the cells in your visible part of the largest organ of your body?

I noticed a study saying the shortness of breath that some people experience during
exercise is partially caused by a partial collapse of the airway during exercise. It seems
that after starting cpap treatment this condition improves.
