NG Tube Can't Use CPAP in Hospital
NG Tube Can't Use CPAP in Hospital
In the past few years I've been hospitalized several times for small bowel obstruction. The treatment is gut rest. This means inserting an nasogastric tube down my nose. It hangs out of one nostril and is connected to a container on the wall. Darn uncomfortable but it works. There is no way I could use any type of mask like this. I pray I never have this problem again but if I do, any suggestions for how to breathe the best I can without the CPAP?

If you are not a mouth breather, you may want to check out the TrueBlue mask. It has a very generous gasket that should allow a small tube to pass underneath it with minimal leaks. Once you have everything in place some padding could be used to plug any remaining leaks.

There's the Oracle mask, which some here use, which is completely oral:
https://www.cpap.com/cpap-masks/oral-cpap-mask.php
People either seem to love it, or be completely unable to adapt to it. With a tube up your nose, it might be easier.
If you can sleep with the head of the bed cranked up, that might help also.

I stayed one night here awhile back and I just raised the head of my bed way up and had no problem cause I didn't sleep much anyway. If your experience is any thing like mine someone is always coming in wanting something from you, so who sleeps. The hospital is the last place to go for rest.

Re: NG Tube Can't Use CPAP in Hospital
Take a look at my post on the Oracle 452 mask (link in my signature block).
With the nasal tube installed, it may be that stopping nasal leaks might be an issue. The best bet would be to use the nasal clips like those used in pulmonary function testing or have the nursing staff tape your nostrils closed to stop leaking.
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help if you decide to try the Oracle mask.

Re: NG Tube Can't Use CPAP in Hospital
Thanks everyone for your ideas. I am grateful.
I wouldn't be able to use any nose clips whatsoever. Can the Oracle work without them?
From the photos on cpap.com the True Blue wouldn't work.
Maybe sleeping more or less sitting up would be the way to go. I think the longest it took was five days to clear the blockage so that wouldn't be so bad. I think.

Yes, the Oracle mask can be used without the nose clips. That's the way I sleep.
My concern is whether the NG tube would interfere with being able to close off the nasal passageway.
What is the nature of the issue that leads you to believe you can't use a nose clip.
The one I recommend is very soft and not the least painful to use.
The alternative will be tape.

Re: NG Tube Can't Use CPAP in Hospital
I may be totally off base, but I'd like to think that the respiratory therapy people in the hospital have come upon this problem in the past, and have some solution... you might give that dept a call and see what they say, to put your mind at rest. they may have a specially modified mask, for instance.jaycee2 wrote:In the past few years I've been hospitalized several times for small bowel obstruction. Re: NG Tube Can't Use CPAP in Hospital
Well, not fully understanding nasogastric tubes I watch a video on how it is inserted. You are most likely correct. The True Blue gasket could handle the tube by itself, but could not compensate for the tape used to anchor it in place. If the tape was anchored on your cheek it would have a chance, but it most likely works much better to anchor it at the nose.
If you can plug your nose the oracle looks good. One way to stop air through your nose is to tape your nares, gently.

Here is a Respironics mask designed for this specific purpose.
Respironics Inc Image3® Full Face Mask
Its for hospital single use and can come with an optional seal that accomodates an NG tube.
http://www.healthcare.philips.com/main/ ... image3.wpd
Edit: Image3 User Guide
Edit 2: Additional NG Compatable masks from Respironics
Apparently they share a common cushion interface.

Wow, what good ideas. I can see that a lot of though went into them. I'm now more well-informed on how to handle the situation. If I find myself in the hospital again for this I'll make sure that the respiratory therapy department knows and let them fit me with an appropriate mask. You guys are the best!

big +1 to JDS74 for finding that mask designed just for this situation!
most times, we're not unique, there's other people with the problem, and likely someone's figured out something to do about it.... we just have to find out what that is.

Don't worry -- believe it or not, hospitals and doctors usually do know what they are doing.
They will likely fit you with something like this ==== http://rudolphkc.com/product_detail.php?id=12
One way or another they will set you up with a solution, cpap or otherwise, to prevent you from having apneas etc., post op.
Good luck with your surgery.

Wow, so many great replies... I'll freely admit I was stumped when I tried to think of a solution. Many minds can crack just about any problem. Please let us know if your doctors come up with anything.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
