CPAP Study: Win Amazon Giftcard!

Post by Stephanie.Schwenke » Wed May 20, 2015 2:33 am

Dear CPAP Users,

For my Master's Thesis at the University of Freiburg (Germany), I am studying CPAP Users' opinions about their machines. To this end I have created an online questionnaire that takes about 10 -20 minutes to complete. You can find it here: https://www.soscisurvey.de/CPAP_Thoughts/

Because of the unpopularity of the implicit association test portion of the questionnaire, I have shortened this portion and made it optional. If you previously began the study, but quit because of this portion, you are welcome to complete it now!

To thank you for helping me with my thesis work, you're invited to enter a drawing for an Amazon Giftcard worth 10 dollars/euros (or other currency). If you know other CPAP users who might be interested in filling this questionnaire out, please share the link with them.

Several users have commented on the first task, because it is unusual, therefore a brief explanation here. This task is what is called an "implicit association task" - used in psychology to measure implicit attitudes. Often such tests are used to learn about "hidden" prejudice, in this case I am hoping to get an idea of your implicit associations with medical technology. There are three blocks of this sorting task, thereafter "normal" questions follow.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.

Thank you for your support,

Stephanie Schwenke

Looked at the questionnaire, got to the first "task". No idea how that has anything to do with cpap, unless you are simply trying to figure out what words to use in marketing?

Anyway, I stopped, no idea how to even respond.

Had the same experience and stopped also.

Title or first post may have included the words "marketing buzzwords".

I apologize to everyone for confusion regarding the questionnaire. Thank you for taking time to share your problems.

The first task in the questionnaire is what is called an "Implicit Association Test". Such tests are frequently used in psychology to measure individuals' implicit attitudes towards various things. Most well known are tests that measure prejudice against different races. My goal here is to learn about your implicit attitudes towards medical technology.

My research is not funded, nor does it have any marketing aims.

If you have any further concerns, please feel free to ask me!

I just completed the survey. Just did it to do it however, it never asks for anything like my name so how am I entered to win the Amazon card? The J and F word thing is necessary for the Q and A part later. It makes sure you understand positive and negatives words.
Morbius, are you bored?

Stephanie,

Thanks for clarifying.

I tried it again and it goes way too fast for me which may not be everyone's experience. So I won't be participating any more.

For anyone further interested in what exactly implicit attitudes are, I recommend checking out projectimplicit: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/faqs.html#faq2
They do a far better job of explaining than I can, but here is a brief summary of their explanation:
"How does the IAT measure implicit attitudes and stereotypes?
The IAT measures the strength of associations between concepts (e.g., black people, gay people) and evaluations (e.g., good, bad) or stereotypes (e.g., athletic, clumsy). The main idea is that making a response is easier when closely related items share the same response key. We would say that one has an implicit preference for straight people relative to gay people if they are faster to categorize words when Gay People and Bad share a response relative to when Gay People and Good share a response key." (from ProjectImplicit)

Thank you everyone who has given me valuable feedback!

The study has been updated so that the sorting task many of you found frustrating/irritating is now optional and at the end of the test! You can win one of the Amazon giftcards without completing it. If you do complete it, you get to enter the drawing a second time.

I'm grateful for your continued support,

Stephanie

Another Update!

Your feedback has been very valuable to me! In response to many concerns and questions about the sorting task, I have made that portion optional. You can now get two entries into the gift card drawing. One for completing the sorting task and one for the rest of the survey.

If the sorting task bothered you before, please try the survey again!

If you have any more concerns or comments, please feel free to ask me!
