Quick: I need a non-toxic Super Glue to glue my mask or....

Post by Jimmycrackhorn » Mon May 04, 2015 6:41 pm

... Or is Superglue perfectly alright.

I have a Mirage Fx and the hook part of the mask (hook used loosely) that is where I put one of the straps to hold it down on the right side of my face broke accidentally, and now I want to glue it back together since my insurance doesn't cover a new mask for like 4 more months.

I was worried that perhaps superglue might put off toxic fumes that might seep into the mask while I sleep from the part once dried, but I'm no chemist so I could be way off mark.

OR is there a nice strong glue that is non-toxic if I breathe it once dried I can use on the part that wont break off easily...

I guess I just don't want any weird fumes going into my body while I sleep for 8 - 10 hours.

lmk thanks!

Have you considered duct tape...?

The fumes from super glue only last for a few minutes. It should work fine if you can get the parts clean to start with. Skin oil can make it ineffective.

Ok noted. And I was thinking tape but the piece is small and I'm not sure it would be strong enough to hold without bending... I could try though.

Once the super glue dries, you can rinse it with clear, running water to reduce outgassing.
My concern is if the cyanoacrylate is strong enough for a structural application.

Don't know about the glue but have you checked with your insurance on just the frame? Sometimes they have different replacement schedules for parts and mine covered a frame at 3 months. Maybe they will cover one especially since it is broken.

Remember that the intake for the air you breathe is at the other end of the hose at the machine filter.

Ok thanks for the input. You guys are awesome. My replacement is 6 months for the frame and 1 month for the face thingy. I just got the stupid ESON that I hate so much right now like 2 months ago and they only give me 30 days to return it for exchange.... I'll have to get handy for the time being...

superglue doesn't outgass after it cures, as mentioned above.

it's also not very strong for situations like what you're talking about.

I recently glued up a mask with some 3m plastic glue similar to this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Loctite-0-85 ... /100371824

I've also recently found bondic (look on youtube) it's really neat, it's a liquid plastic that hardens with an included UV light, the starter kit for it is about 22$ on amazon. I used it to fix some broken plastic stuff on my fridges ice dispenser last week. way better than superglue. (also, no odor after it cures, and it cures in about 4 seconds with the UV light)

You need a solution for months, not a few days. You can get that part on Ebay inexpensively. I think I'm seeing under $20. CPAP.com has replacement parts. Seems like you must have been really cranking on the straps to break that part.

No, I was more out of it in a haze of tiredness (which I'm trying to figure out if it's because of my Eson mask sucks and isn't working OR because I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome on top of sleep apnea.... Or my Titration of 10 just isn't cutting it. Needless to say my mask fell on my floor near the bed and the day before I was getting the replacement cushion, you guessed it, I stepped on m mask.

Trying the Loctite. They make a specific plastics glue SAID to be able to work on hard to fix plastics. We shall see. It's drying now. If not, I will take your suggestion and check me some ebay...

What size Mirage FX do you use?
I think I have one that was recently donated but I don't remember the size.

well, I can guarantee that the epoxy rated for plastics works and part of the reason it's so good is that it not only sticks together the plastic where it broke, but it also can be applied in thicker layers and builds up and increases the strength of a weak part.

best of luck with what you're doing though.

I use a wide. The thing is, i just realize that I don't have the friggen Elbow Assembly either now... FML... If you have an elbow that would be AWESOME! I THINK the mask may hold steady after messing with it a little but what do I know. I haven't slept with it yet and it looks like it's one more night with the ESON since apparently the last elbow assembly got thrown out with the friggen cushion that ripped.

It looks like this fyi:
