Insurance-participating DME that will supply a Z1?

Post by Sleep87 » Mon May 04, 2015 2:34 pm

I would like to get an HDM Z1 machine for travel. My current DME will not provide one.

I could order it online and submit it as an out-of-network claim, but it would be even better (for me) if I could get BlueCross/BlueShield to pay for it as in-network.

Which means I need an in-network BCBS DME that's willing to order me an HDM Z1. Any recommendations? (Location doesn't really matter - I have a PPO, and they have been very good at paying out-of-state claims. Though it would be handy if the DME would ship the device rather than require me to go pick it up.)

Thank you very much! I have called a number of those suppliers. Many have told me that while they sell the Z1, they will not attempt to bill one to insurance. Some think that the machines provide too little compliance data to satisfy insurance, others just refuse to bill a Z1 to insurance "by policy".

So I'm wondering if there are any reports of success. Have any of you gotten insurance to pay (in-network) for your travel machine?

I use my regular machine for travel.
I'm that spoiled.
My backup machine goes along on the road in case I need to sleep in the car,
but my good machine comes into the room.
Edit: just an FYI, you can read actual reviews on cpap.com from real users of the Z1.

Why?

I've been to Asia, Europe, South America and many places in North America this year with my ResMed S9. I don't see any advantage of travel machines and the therapy might not be as good.

I can understand the charm. That petite, cute little thing.
One gets so excited about "all that extra space" in one's luggage,
that one might forget about noise, iffy data, and no humidification.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield is different in every state. You need to call YOUR BC/BS and find out what providers are in network for you. Then call them all.

Be aware that if you already have a main machine, insurance will not shell out for another just because you travel. That's your dime. Heck, nobody can get a second machine within 5 years even if their home burns down! You have to take it out of home fire insurance proceeds. You only get another if you need a different kind of machine. Your DME wants to be paid and clearly, your current one doesn't think your insurance will pay it, so they won't help.

So, you have to decide if it is worth your time to call all these places, starting with the insurance company OR just buy the machine online and get reimbursed at the out-of-network rate.

To get my insurance and DME to supply a s9 (when they were new) i got my Dr to specifically state a "s9 autoset" in his prescription

They had no choice but to follow doctors orders

While reading the reviews, I may have a clue why the Z1 may not be covered by insurance.
Someone reported a problem with the data, not even recording compliance for a night!
Compliance is somewhat a swear word here, but insurance companies and Medicare seem to be stuck on it.
