Full Face Mask

Post by sthnreb » Sun May 03, 2015 3:40 pm

I've been using nasal masks for the past 10 years. With this Air Curve S10 Auto Bipap and online MyAir I have leakage. I got a chin strap which has stopped the mouth breathing but that's a lot of straps on the head at night. Thought I would try a full face. Any recommendations? The DME suggested a new Resmed out saying it was the lightest weight and smallest. That is the AirFit F10. Was wondering how it compares with the Mirage Quattro or the Respironics Comfort Gel Blue? Or any other that may be of interest.

Would you consider trying tape, instead of a chin strap ?
It has work well for some people. There are several threads on that subject.
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

I've used a Fisher an Pykel Opus 360 for the past two years. I also have a Fisher and Pykel Simplus full face mask that I se during allergy season and when I have a head cold.

I'm happy with both masks. If you opt for the Simplus it is very important that you wash the removable part of the mask on a daily basis. Failure to do so will build up face oils that will cause leaks. Cleaning my mask daily only takes about 2 minutes so this isn't much of a bother.

Check out the review of the F&P Simplus on Free CPAP Advice in the full face mask section. I use the information from that site to help make my decision.

Thanks for the info. I would consider tape but I have a full beard, short but still full and moustache. If possible to just tape lips maybe. This Quattro Pro nasal I have comes down over the lips anyway and doesn't require much to keep mouth shut. However my nose does look like Rudolph and I don't know why as the mask doesn't touch the end. It stays a little sore at the nostrils where I guess the mask moves up and down and gets pressure there. But, not being real tight it doesn't leak normally. Just looking for a better method without so many straps to fasten. The chin strap leaves impressions on top of head and face. I will write these down and go to the DME and try various ones on.

I have found with my full face of hair that the full face mask will not seal . I use a nasal pillow (Piliaro Q) and a cervical collar to keep jaw up and mouth closed.

I suppose I can live with the chin strap and mask but was looking for all and the best option for me. I need to at least try the full face. My nostrils are more slotted than round and they suggest people with more round nostrils do best with nasal pillows. I have a couple of nasal pillow masks but after a few days my nose is sore. Seal and comfort is what all seek.

I have not tried many face masks but I will give a +1 on the Simplus which I like even better than the mirage quattro even though I am kind of in between sizes on the Simplus. It is such a simple design with only three parts, plus the size can be changed by changing cushions which are available on Ebay for $25 or less w/ shipping. I have a goatee and mustache but I was able to get leak free nights by trimming the corners pretty short bridging the mustache and goatee where the silicone rides and the path between the lip and the beginning of the goatee. I also have more room to slide my specially modified glasses under the top brace than I did with the Quattro. The picture in my profile is when I had the Simplus hacked up to try to use while waiting for the hose swivel that was missing when I got the used mask but I have since replaced it properly.

BTW: I am not putting down the Mirage Quattro in any way because I really liked the Quattro a lot. I still use one if I want to take a nap and too lazy to fetch the Simplus cushion from the drying rack.

I am currently waiting for nose pillows to arrive to see if I have learned to breathe through my nose. I think a chin strap would make me feel claustrophobic and if taping means something like actually putting tape across your lips it makes me start to gasp just thinking about it.

Mirage Quattro works awesome for me

Tried the Air and a few others and couldn't stop the leaks

Greyghost4 has an excellent idea with the cervical collar. It really works wonders with keeping your jaw from dropping. Unlike a chin strap that pulls your jaw backwards, the cervical collar props your jaw up in its natural position. I think it's much more comfortable than the chin strap. If you can keep your lips closed while asleep, this is definitely worth a try!
