Resmed Mirage FX venting

This may be an obsolete mask, but I've got an old one I'm playing with. It looks like it should have a vent around the air holes (manual implies it as well). I would expect that I could put the mask on without a hose, block the hose connection, and exhale and have the air go out the vents. It doesn't seem to be happening; the air sneaks around the silicon seal.

Should I expect that to work?
