Nasal pillow without strap???

Post by quirkyone » Sat Apr 25, 2015 8:57 pm

It's taken an absurdly long period of time, but I was hooked up with a ResMed AutoSet 10 last Monday (my sleep study was last September!) So far it's going pretty well. My tested AHI was almost 32; last night I think I was at 3.

Anyway, my problem is actually the mask straps. I have a mindblowing case of Occipital Neuralgia... bad enough that I can barely touch the back of my neck/skull to shampoo. I selected the P10 pillow because it offered the most minimalist soft straps I could find, but even that little contact is still exacerbating my nerve pain.

I'm aware of the TapPap. Are there any other options for masks (of any type) that don't require straps?

The F&P Oracle- oral mask is supposedly usable without any straps/headgear at all. I plan to try it, but I haven't yet. Good luck finding something that works. https://www.cpap.com/productpage/fisher ... -mask.html

I don't know of any other nasal pillow mask that doesn't use some sort of headgear except the Tap Pap.
With my preference for as little as possible on my face or head I would be a prime candidate for it.
I used the Tap Pap for almost a year until the P10 was relased.

Thanks. I'll research that some more in the morning.

And I almost used the exact same image as an avatar... then I felt guilty since I have Danes and not a Frenchie.

Check out the Beeze nasal pillow system at cpap.com. Read the reviews. It's what I use and while it has two side straps, they are up high, very soft and flexible, and the mask works fine without them because the top part and the back part are wide. The only points of contact are the back of the head, the top of the head, and the bottom of your nose.

It looks like this:

Here's a picture of what it looks like without the side straps:

I use the Oracle 452 mask and it can be used without any headgear at all. It is the only oral mask out there.
The caveat is related to max pressure. I have had difficulties for pressures above 20 cmH2O without the headgear. Below 15 cmH2O, I never needed it.
Please read my extensive post on using it in my signature block below.
If you want to try the mask and need any help, please let me know

The F & P Pilaro has only 1 thin strap. It is a really nice mask. My favorite by far. Note it does come with 2 straps, but I use the single 1 size fits all strap.

Bella loops on a Swift FX mask is an excellent choice unless your ears are sensitive.

The loops alone are under $25, unless you pay for shipping.

I initially thought about the Swift FX and the Bella loops but technically they are straps and while they can work for a lot of people (I was successful using them) I was afraid that the straps around the ears might cause more pressure on things than the P10 headgear is causing. While not a lot of tension is involved ...there is tension and finding just the right amount is critical to getting and keeping a seal and not causing ear pain.

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... -cpap.html
comes with small, medium and large nasal pillows in addition to the traditional headgear.
There is a "For Her" package that comes with XSmall, small and medium nasal pillows.

I wonder how it compares to the similar looking ResMed Airfit P10?

I love the P10 too but am curious what made you quit using the Tap Pap. It looks like it would be nice.

Because I am a fickle lazy woman.

The P10 came out and I was interested so I tried it and liked it and was going to go back to my Tap Pap (would involve doing another boiling fitting thing) but I was lazy and kept putting it off because I was happy with the P10 and then I had a problem with a back lower molar...some discomfort from an old, old filling and while the mouth guard on the Tap Pap didn't ever touch it I just didn't want added discomfort because at that time anything in my mouth made my whole mouth hurt. So I finally got the tooth fixed but have been lazy...to lazy to do the boil thing again and since I have been totally happy with the P10 I wasn't in any real hurry or even in any real need.

The whole idea behind the Tap Pap was no headgear at all..and with the P10 I don't ever really notice the headgear so it's like it isn't there. So I just haven't gone back to the Tap Pap. I probably will give it another go one of these days when I feel like doing that tiny bit of work need to fit the mouth guard but I just haven't got around to it.
Finally after 6 or 8 months on the P10 I changed my profile but that doesn't mean that I tossed my Tap Pap.

Ah! I had a boy playing football back in the day and recall having to boil a mouthpiece or 12...I'm not sure I could handle a hose over my head all night though. I slept in my grandson's room for a few hours last night and used that tiny nasal mask with the weird silver headgear that has the hose attachment on it. It's a PR mask I think. It was awkward to have the hose so high but I am not totally sure I had the headgear on correctly.

And for nearly 6 years now routing the hose upward over my head is all I have ever done.
No hose management system though...just lay the long hose on the mattress and around the top of the bed pillow and down to my face. That way when I toss and turn I don't wrap it around me. I always start out the night on my left side with my back to my machine. Doing it this way I think I have only tried to strangle myself twice in all that time.
I did it with the Swift LT and then the Swift FX and then of course the Tap Pap and even now with the P10.
Also did it with all the other nasal pillow masks I have tried over the years. It's laying on the mattress up beyond the top of the bed pillow. I rarely even know it is there.
