Newbie on CPAP... It's Working!!!

Post by SleepMama » Sat Apr 25, 2015 6:52 pm

Hi! I started CPAP therapy last week and while I still have a long way to go, I am feeling so much better already. I am a single mom to 3 girls and I was suffering from heart problems (racing heartbeat), headaches, high blood pressure, breathing problems and ear problems. I would wake up feeling terrible... found out after the sleep study I had 106 apnea events per hour. I like the CPAP therapy and didn't have much problem adjusting to it. I was so tired that the mask didn't bother me and I actually felt so much better when I woke up that I was happy that I found a way to sleep. Before CPAP I could fall asleep easily but could not stay asleep so now I sleep, dream and wake up feeling good.

The only problem I had was the nose mask I use was irritating my face, but I figured out it was the soap I was using to clean the mask, but so far so good. I couldn't lose weight before, but since starting the CPAP I have lost about 5lbs. I am hopeful things continue to get better.

Thanks so wonderful to hear SleepMama! I'm a newbie to all this as well and have been on CPAP therapy for just over a week. My first two nights I felt pretty good but then started having some difficulties getting adjusted to it all. I've been taking my mask off in the night which is counterproductive and I feel the difference when I wake up in the morning. I'm so glad to hear that you're doing well and I hope you keep feeling better and better It certainly is an adjustment and I started to feel a bit discouraged with my progress but to hear that you're doing good makes me feel like there's some hope and I just have to stick with it and make changes as needed So happy for you!

Glad to hear this
I've been using an APAP for almost 2 years. I never knew how bad I felt until I started using the machine. I feel better than ever! My BP is normal, EKGs normal, no more acid reflux! I got to the point I can't even fall asleep without my mask on and machine blowing air up my nose

I've noticed that getting the mask on correctly at night is something you have to learn. If it's not right it does make u want to take it off. I noticed I had it on too tight at first... loosen the straps a little helped it feel more comfortable.

Excellent! Stories like this encourage us. After a while, you may want to add your story to the Success thread at the top of the forum - lots of people see those posts and they stay around longer there.

Why don't you fill out the equipment sections of your profile - then your equipment will show up at the bottom of every post you make like mine does below?

If you are interested and have a supported machine, you might consider installing the wonderful SleepyHead software to look at your data. Absolutely not necessary if things are going well. You body will continue to adjust to the therapy and it should only get better from here.
