sleep apnea

Post by tinabiglips » Wed Jan 26, 2005 8:22 pm

Hi there everyone, went to other topic instead this one so sorry if everyone reads this twice.
I suffer from sleep apnea but only when I eat certain foods, I only get it once in the night but it is very very severe, I dont use a mask as I dont need to, sometimes I can go weeks without an episode.
It distresses me a great deal and i feel like im going to die. If I stay offf certain foods like peanuts, vegemite (aussie for those who done know bout it, it is like a yeast extract, soy sauce really affects me).
Just wondering if anyone out there has a similar problem, dont think I need a mask if I control it, but my father and late brother suffer from it so not sure if it is in the family or not, my sister and brother dont have it.
Also have had a few bouts of pneumonia, would the apnea make my chest weak????
Thanks for having me on the site, look forward to any answers you have, otherwise I am very very fit and healthy 44 year old with 3 grown up children.
THanks for all replies.

Hi,
I didn't see your other post. But did you get tested for sleep apnea? If yes, do you know the results of your sleep test? How do you know you didn't have an "episode"? From what I know, just because you don't notice an episode doesn't mean you don't have them. What are your symptoms? Do you snore? Do you breath funny or are told you seem to stop breathing while you are sleeping? If you do have sleep apnea and aren't being treated for it, the condition can affect your heart and can give you high blood pressure and other problems. Often we address the symptoms when treatment for the apnea can help relieve some of the symptoms. Let us now more about it, and I'm sure plenty of people here at the forum can help.

I have never heard of anyone knowing when they have an apnea occur nor have I heard food can cause this condition. My understanding is if you have sleep apnea you will require a machine nightly, regardless of how often you have an "episode". I just lost two very close friends to heart failure. Both had sleep apnea and both had machines. And yes, neither one of them was using their cpap machines. This is not a disorder that you can diagnois yourself. You may suspect whats going on, but with todays technology you should leave it up to the pros. On this site you can do your homework and learn all about the symptoms and side effects from sleep apnea. You will find out that this condition can cause all sorts of health problems. My last piece of advice is to call your Dr. today. Not tomorrow or the day after----Today!

Take Care!!

Hi Tina,
Have you ever been tested for allergies? Peanuts and soy products are high on the lists of foods that people are allergic to. My allergy to eggs caused severe nose and throat swelling. I had a hard time figuring out what was causing it until I had an allergy test. It may be worth checking into. Perhaps that is what is closing off your airway and causing your apnea.
