My sleep study is on Saturday
My sleep study is on Saturday
So I was just at the Doctor's yesterday and the lab called, is setting me up for Saturday. Tomorrow they will deliver paperwork for me to fill out. 9:45 is when the study starts. 6 am is when it ends.
Do you think I should take some melatonin to help me sleep for the study? I do take melatonin sometimes.
They said that they don't show me results immediately. They take 2 weeks and then give results to my doctor. Is that how it normally happens? Will you be able to get a copy of the results from the doctor? Because often times he seems to do things his way, for instance I wasn't able to get sleeping pills for the study. I have allergies and wasn't able to get him to get me on shot therapy.

Re: My sleep study is on Saturday
I would take the melatonin with me just in case you need it.
I had an ambien (sleeping pill) and it was still extremely difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Have it available just in case.
Getting the results from the doctor...the time varies and how it is handled varies.
My sleep study was originally supposed to be a split study if I qualified soon enough but I had such a hard time getting to sleep and staying asleep that by the time I was asleep enough to meet the criteria there simply wasn't enough time left to do the titration part of the sleep study.
The tech's can't really tell you much but the tech knew I had a medial back ground and just looked at me and smiled and said "be seeing you soon" and left it at that.
The doctor's nurse called in a few days and gave me the official news that I would be going back for titration.
Once I had the titration study...I had the RX within 3 days and they were a day late because one of the girls in the office who did the dictation broke her ankle.
Never saw the doctor to discuss the results until I went for my follow up to meet Medicare requirements.
How your doctor handles things might be totally different so the best place to start with these types of questions is with his nurse most likely...she really runs the office anyway

Oh...those sleep study results...they are a part of your medical record and they cannot deny those to you.
You may have to file a formal request and jump through some hoops but they can't keep them from you...it's the law...
When I went for the follow up visit at about 60 days I think it was...they handed me a copy without my having to ask. It wasn't the big long detailed fancy report but it was sufficient for my needs because it covered where my problems were especially bad.
It's all up to the doctor as to how easy or difficult they want to make it though...but they can't deny it.

Re: My sleep study is on Saturday
It took me two days each time (sleep study, titration) to get the results which I was able to see before a followup appointment with my doctor. In my situation, because of insurance requirements, I had to go to a sleep lab not affiliated with my doctor. So maybe because they operated separately, I was able to get everything alot more quickly? Hard to say. But because of my experiences, I am thinking you should diplomatically check to see if the report is done alot sooner than 2 weeks and ask for a copy which is your right.Enchanter wrote:So I was just at the Doctor's yesterday and the lab called, is setting me up for Saturday. Definitely ask for a copy of the test results. As Pugs said, they are yours and you have a right to them. Don't worry about all the wires or the amount of sleep you get. I thought I didn't sleep at all, but it doesn't take much to properly diagnose.

Melatonin does not work immediately like a sleeping pill. Bringing it with you to take if you need it may not work. If you normally take it before bed, I would take it prior to going to the sleep study or as soon as you get there.. I was always told to take it an hour before bed.

Just a note here: this would probably not be a good time to use melatonin for the very first time.
(For those who have NOT taken it before.)
It would be good to know how your body responds to it ---in advance.

Excellent point. Melatonin is not without some very ugly side effects for some people and you sure don't want them happening in the sleep lab. I speak from experience in regards to ugly side effects.chunkyfrog wrote:Just a note here: this would probably not be a good time to use melatonin for the very first time.

One shouldn't change their normal routine and that especially means no new drugs/meds and that includes OTC stuff.

Re: My sleep study is on Saturday
On my first sleep study I was told the same thing, no instant feedback, two weeks wait then see the doc. However, I was real nice to the sleep tech and assured him I wold never rat him out if he spilled the beans, and he told me "you have apnea, big time". That made the wait to see the doc easier. I later had titration study.Enchanter wrote:So I was just at the Doctor's yesterday and the lab called, is setting me up for Saturday. I had no trouble getting the results in written form from the doc two weeks later. However, I could never get a copy of my prescription. As I learned the ropes, i realized that that was because the doctor was also his own DME, and by not giving me the prescription he planned on keeping me as a permanent cash cow, along with all his patients.
Once I figured it out, I simply went to the PA I usually go to, showed her the sleep tests and she wrote me an "unlimited" scrip for equipment and supplies.
So, if you are nice to the sleep tech's they might throw you a bone!

Can you ask the doctor for temazepam if you can't sleep. Our doctors prescribe temazepam for most our patients on a "as needed" basis. It calms them.

As another one who had ugly side effects from melatonin, I wanted to second what Pugsy said.Pugsy wrote:Excellent point. Re: My sleep study is on Saturday
It is not ideal to have to take a sleeping pill for a sleep test. And I would not want to have to take anything I hadn't used before and was familiar with. But to answer your question directly, I would and I did because I had to. I knew my body and my difficulty at the time in often not being able to fall asleep sometimes for hours and hours. And I was afraid, because of the strange (different) surroundings, that that might occur and blow the entire test. My fear turned out to be well-founded. So after 3 hours I downed a pill I had often used before, and soon got to sleep.Enchanter wrote:So I was just at the Doctor's yesterday and the lab called, is setting me up for Saturday. I'm happy to hear below from Sleepstar, that at least some places on an "as needed" basis will provide a sleeping aid when it's necessary.

Since you're familiar with melatonin, yes.Enchanter wrote:...Do you think I should take some melatonin to help me sleep for the study? I do take melatonin sometimes.
I'm still waiting for insurance to approve my split sleep study--it's been 10 days since the sleep doc sent it in. I'll be doing as much as I can to make it like home--bring my own pillow, take a pill with melatonin and a little taurine and magnesium about 1/2 hour before bed, and put a drop of Lavender essential oil on my pillow.

Enchanter, good luck! I hope the study goes well (whatever that means??? I think it means - "I hope you get enough sleep that they can complete the study"). No matter the result of the study, you'll be one step closer to figuring this all out.
