WHY!!!

Post by 134 » Sun Apr 19, 2015 6:46 pm

Due to needing a new machine (mine is 6 years old) I had to go for my second ever sleep study.

I can honestly say the first test night without the machine was HORRIBLE and SCARY! When I was first diagnosed with severe sleep apnea the doctor told me to not even take a nap without using my machine!!!

Since the first test 6 years ago I have gained about 20-25 pounds so I knew it wouldn't be good night. My question is since we, the doctors and insurance companies know how dangerous it is to have sleep apnea, isn't there a better way than to put our heart and lives at risk sleeping without the machine!!!!!!

I'm already dreading the thought of having to do another test in the future.

There simply has to be a better way than putting our selves through the danger of sleeping with our cpap machines.

What can be done?

You've started out with a false assumption.
Do you have a prescription from your past sleep study when they issued your current machine?
If you'd have gotten it, you wouldn't "need" another study.
From your other recent post, I see you have a machine that doesn't collect data.

Machine - ResMed Escape 8

Even without a prescription, there are ways to acquire fully data-capable machines. That's what I would recommend if you haven't committed to or done the recently recommended sleep study. (I wasn't clear as to whether you've actually had a recent sleep study.)

Anyway, get a fully data-capable machine and you probably won't have to do this again.

Yes, in order for me to get a new machine paid for by my insurance company they required that I go for a "new" sleep study.

Therefore, I had to go for another sleep study, the first sleep study when I was given my current machine was 6 years ago.

You probably already know this, but the other disservice that comes up in your story is that you were given a brick machine which means for the past six years your doctor has had no way to tell if your PAP therapy is working optimally. No treatment data whatsoever. It's a good thing that you've been sleeping and feeling better all this time because if you hadn't been there would have been no way to investigate the problems. Still, you may or may not be getting the best possible therapy with the brick. This time around I encourage you to make sure you don't get another brick.

It is funny you say that because the doctor never even asked to look at the numbers shown on the machine (hours/days used). If he had, he would have at least seen that I have been almost 100% compliant for 6 years.

I certainly hope that you got your prescription (physical document) and a fully data-capable machine this time. Your insurance will pay (by insurance code) the same amount for the top of the line machines as they will for the bottom of the line ones.
Don't make this same mistake again.
And, depending on what your insurance pays, your co-pay, deductibles and other things, you may be paying more going the route you did than just purchasing one out-of-pocket.

I haven't had the office appointment with the doctor yet to get my prescription.

This time I'll get a physical prescription (they never gave me one the first time) and buy a second machine to have on hand.

How good or bad is the new Resmed Air10 machine?

My wife doesn't like the idea of someone else having the ability to change my pressure remotely like we were told this machine is capable of doing.

Is this a good or bad concept?

You want to avoid the airsense 10 cpap model it has very limited data. Here is a site to show you the machines that have data. https://sleep.tnet.com/equipment/cpapmachines
As far as the remote monitoring and changing of pressures, everyone has to make up their own mind on that. I prefer not to be monitored but there may be advantages for some.

If I was getting a Resmed Airsense 10, I would go for the Autoset if possible because you can run it in fixed cpap mode or in auto mode and the For Her model gives you extra algorithms that even a man can use. Although, the Elite model is good for straight Cpap mode and does give you data that you can monitor.

That remote access thing on the AirSense machines...you can essentially stop it from transmitting if you wish.
It has what they call "airplane mode" like our cell phones and when in airplane mode it can't transmit and the DME can't reach it.
Now every time you start the machine it will likely prompt you "you are in airplane mode, do you wish to continue" or something like that wording...and it takes only a millisecond to move on past it and deny it and thus stay in airplane mode.

I just had my second sleep study (technically third) since it has been about 6 yrs for me as well. However, I got a titration study to find what my new pressures should be. I too was given a brick 6 years ago. My insurance didn't require it that I am aware of, it was a decision made between myself and my dr to have it done so we could see where I need to be pressure wise vs what my brick was set at. We took the new titration results and he wrote me an Rx for the Autoset for Her. I did have to provide my initial diagnostic study from 6 yrs ago (different study center and insurance) in order for the insurance to approve the machine though. Sorry you had to have an uncomfortable night without the machine just so you can get a new one

I'd get the s10 autoset it's a great machine and as for the hacking it would take 10 time the effort to hack it as it would a back or your phone so it's really a non-issue
